I'm always surprised to hear how much drive is in the bass from those 70s and 80s tunes that I never noticed in the radio mixes. I thought the bass in "Jump" was totally clean until I heard this.

The video above made me think of this video. Dude really managed to look cool with his bass without actually being heard.

Although, I do not need to defend Kip Winger, he is a pretty impressive musician. And he can dance...this is not necessarily representative of his musicianship.

Cool video and I like the premise of it. However, the peanut gallery giggling the entire time was quite was quite distracting. I can understand two guys chuckling because "how the heck am I supposed to know that?". It is amazing how dirty the bass lines are recorded and/or how they sound soloed.

Was going to post something similar......folks forget that he is a very accomplished arranger and composer (he was a Grammy nomination for classical composing). Plus, the guy knows how to laugh at himself, like Justin Timberlake, which definitely takes the edge off........I have a few Winger albums and many of the songs that weren't hits are very well written and performed. Beavis and Butthead made them pariahs but a listen to some of these other album cuts proves to me they were a cut above many of their contemporaries

also: there are quite a few of us who have consistently posted way dumber things!

It is funny to me, although I didn't watch the whole thing since I kind of caught the joke early and figured they'd all be pretty much the same.

What it says to me is that you can do a lot with a little on the low end. You don't always have to hang on the root, but there's no shame in playing that kind of line if that's what the music demands.

It's kind of a little brother to this one, which I also find very funny:

Thing is... if you asked a classic rock cover band bassist (a good one) the same questions, he'd probably get 1 and 4 correct also.

Seriously - I have never listened to frickin winger, and would not care about their bass lines. I totally hear the acdc ness of the 2nd one, but which one? No idea. Or it could be one of many other famous bass lines from other bands.

But if you were to play any ICONIC bass lines, a classic rock cover band bassist would likely get nearly every one, out of a long list probably. And in fact many of us here on this forum would probably too.

Now I kind of want someone to put together a real test with great famous lines, soloed, and an anonymous tally of the answers from us... THAT might be fun!

Perhaps it's telling that with the exception of AC/DC (guessed KISS - Lick It Up)I got them all correct.

Thundercat is probably cashing some nice checks from Rap playing and producing gigs.

The thing about a good studio bassist is that your ego has to be fulfilled by playing the right part, not the fanciest. It is also important to remember that even simple stuff has to be played properly.

agreed! lots of young(er) players don't want to 'waste time' on stuff they think they "already know."

But they did use studio gear that we now have available in compact pedal format today.
