The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

Believe it or not I wasn't using any special settings, but I was driving the bass hard (a 59 Custom Shop Precision), and playing into the Fender neo 610 cab for a change (I usually use my Bergantino NV215). May have been something to do with the room and hollow bottom wooden stage, but I was using the vintage channel on bass 3, mids 8 and treble 6, gain and master both on 5. Horn on the cab on about a third. I was digging in a bit and using Thomastik flatwounds. Great gig it was, too - you always know you done well when others start posing about it on Facebook the day after :D

Vintage channel huh.. I'll experiment on my Studio Bass 200

I finally got a chance to gig the SB this weekend in a fairly large - almost medium sized hall - club. Used my Berg HT/ER 112 mini stack.

Of course the SB performed exceptionally well. I only used the vintage channel on this maide voyage. Had the Vol set to about 6 and the MV set to about 7.5 at the soundcheck. Wow!

This club has a killer FOH system. But my only complaint was that to get the rig to the point where I liked the output levels on the stage the FOH guy kept telling me to turn it down because they could not add the bass to the FOH mix :-)
I finally settled on a MV setting of just under 5 and the Vol setting of 4.

Of course, as the night moved along, the MV crept up to 6.5. And let me tell you, there was a world of goodness that happened in that room after the MV gets to 6 :bassist:

It got to the point where the FOH guy just gave up and took me out of the mix entierly.

I gave him my best Cheshire Cat smile and told him "Wait'll the matching 610 cab gets here next week" ;)

Yeah, I'm really interested in the Prodigy and the Bassman 100t. Originally the prodigy was only going to be 120 watts, but they redesigned it using KT88 power tubes for more power. No idea if it can hang with the Fenders tone wise. But I'd like to find out.

got a call from the fender tech and after he sent a email to fender they sent out a new bias control board. the tech ran the amp all day with the new part and all ok, he mentioned the part was similar to the super sonic 100 head the new fender twin and of course the 100t, he said he knew of no technical bulletin on the issue from fender . looking forward to getting it back , and having no more problems with it.

I finally got results in talking my local into getting one Super Bassman in & have tried it at a couple of gigs. :eek:

used these settings thru one (modded) PF115HE one gig.
(Vintage ch- V-5, Bass-5, mids-9, treble-3. Overdrive ch.- gain-5, blend-between 1&6 clean to dirty, volume- 5, bass - 5, mid freq- 3, mid - 6, treb- 4)
Having the footswitchable channels lets me have an overdriven tone on the one & clean on other. Then simply adjust the blend control for a quick more "modern" but clean tone outta the overdrive channel.
Such heft to each note. I think I'll have to keep it, a s - l - o - w payment plan ;)
I 100% agree with Tim1's posts that this amp gets the SVT-VR tone easily. :thumbup: & with the footswitchable channels, it allows me to leave my pedalboard outta the loop. Freeing up stage area, setting up time etc etc....

Loved the YBA300, but having 2 channels, footswitchable just nailed it.
No more Shuttle, Studio Bass, & 3 basses I can "do without".
I had 3 gigs this past weekend.
2 doco'd above.
1- SB300 > modded PF115HE (sealed 1x15") 62AVRI Precision with Labella tapes - THAT'S the sound! I'd had it before, but not with this amount of versatility, & in one of my bands we go from 50's RnR to 2012 (11?) Beyonce.
Having the vintage channel set, as Tim1 stated earlier, "that SVT-VR tone" -which is pretty much my ideal vintage bass tone- which this amp does SO well & with ease, the "Overdrive" channel set clean but with a 'modern' bent then simply ONE knob- the "blend" - go to a gritty overdrive just works wonderfully for me.
I just move the blend from 0 for the modern clean to 6 or 7 for a blended overdrive. And this is only my first few gigs with it:eek:
Gig 2 - SB300 > NV412 (sealed 4x12) EBMM Stingray 5 - punch city!
Gig 3 - SB300 > 2 Bergantino AE112's - Alleva-Coppolo EUT5 70's jazz 5'er - SIT rounds.
Left it in vintage channel all gig, didn't touch the controls after we stated. Wonderful tubey punch.
I don't think I've heard better.
