The Fender Super Bassman 300 thread

Damn! Got the SB300 & SVT810 dialed in beautifully tonight.
Sounds amazing. As good as the NV412 ???? I dunno. But it's bl@@dy sweet. Punchy like a60s Batman punch - 'Blammo' :woot:
And clear as this beautiful night we're playing outside on.
Rig and EBMM STINGRAY 5 with Elixir rounds. & Warmoth 51P with Fender flats.

Hello guys, i'm new here. I bought SB300 this week from Thomann shop ( I live in Poland). I haven't tried it before buying (only 100T which was lovely, but I wanted more headroom) It arrived on Thursday and i plugged it the same day. I was very excited and like it that day, but afterwards, i realized that i had to set gain to at least 5-6 and master volume 5-6 to get any dynamic sound out of that amp I(on vintage channel) . I was even able to increase it up to 8-9 on gain and 7-8 on master. The sound was then very dirty and generally amazing, but The problem was i couldn't get clean tone out of vintage channel at loud volumes. Also i suppose, as for "stadium" amp, the power wasn't enough (I was able to put gain on 6, master at 10 (!) and i was still able to stay by the cab. Yesterday and today another thing happened. After switching amp on, it was losing or changing tone from time to time for a second or something, and sometimes sudden distorted sound appeared (most often for the first 20-30 minutes). Also leds on bias system used to blink (all together) from time to time for few seconds. Do you have any idea what might have happened? bad tubes, something happened during shipping? I'm going to return it on monday.

I tried it with Fender Aerodyne PJ bass (passive), some other "no name bass" which was active. Cabs: svt 410hlf and Basson 8x10

Sounds like there is an issue with the amp, no way does this amp lack in volume or clean headroom. I have run mine into a 410hlf and I doubt that the speaker would handle much more than 6 and 6 max. You have the right idea - take it back and get it fixed or get a replacement. The bias leds will blink each time you take it out of standby, then should stop after about 30 seconds - the best idea is not to play anything through it for 30 seconds after it comes out of standby while the autobias does its thing.

Yes I waited until it stopped, but afterwards, while playing, it was blinking again for about 30 seconds from time to time. Once it happened exactly when those issues with sudden tone loss happened.
Also it seemed strange to me (but maybe it's normal) that eq on vintage channel isn't very responsive. Especially bass and treble. There was some difference between 1 and 10, but it wasn't totally different tone.

Got one! I found what appears to be a mint condition SB300 on CL, brought it home today.
Here it is looking quite huge on top of my 12/6/1 cube. Quite massive sounding, and I found some nice balanced and punchy tones on channel 1. There's a lot of interesting tones hiding in that weirdo Fender eq setup.

The 12/6/1 is not as impressive sounding as a sealed 8x10, but since it's 20 pounds lighter than the head (45lbs), I won't complain!
I'll try it with the 15/6/1 and both together another day.

Can't wait to gig with it.

I'm finding that the pull-deep acts very different on the two channels. On channel 2, it acts as I would expect, adding bass and a mid scoop.

But on channel 1, it seems to add a lot of low mids or high bass, with no scoop. It actually makes the sound thicker in the mids. I really like that sound but I wanted to check if that was normal. Anybody else notice this?

Also I've never had an amp or cab with tolex, but the tolex on the top of the amp seems a bit crudely glued. They are not actually separating, but from a couple of feet away the seams along each side at the top kind of look like they are. Should I add some extra glue to make sure the seams don't open up, or is it more secure than it looks?

Hey Rod -

Curious your thoughts on the SB/Ampeg combo now that you've gotten to spend more time dialing it in. Seemed you weren't super turned on by it at first, but may have gotten it dialed in? I haven't had the chance to play my new Ampeg cabs yet - they sound fantastic in the living room, but am dying to get them out and about...

I've noticed this too with the pull knob on the vintage channel. It rounds out the low end nicely it feels like. Like the 2nd channel. Where do you have bass dialed in on the vintage channel?

And I have the same thing going on with the tolex, same side too.

The SVT810 is pretty similar to the NV412 really. A li'l less lows and perhaps a li'l less hi's as well. But it sounded righteous with the SB300.
I had both channels going. .. adjusted as such:- vintage channel as per my usual 3/9/4 BMT. And the active channel adjusted to sound similar bit with a Damn good amount of gnarly grind dialed in.
It just sounded as the SB300 does.
Thick, lush, punchy and HUGE. I'm sure the NV412 woulda/coulda done the job just as well but it is nice with those wall of 10s flapping mah pants :hyper::bassist::hyper::bassist::cool::cool::cool:

There's absolutely no reason why I should want this head.

I have an SVT CL in good condition, 10 years old but new to me as of 2 years ago. Sounds fine, gets the job done.

There's no way I could think of springing on one of these as an "upgrade," it's a sidegrade. (Ampeg club members might call it a downgrade, I'm sure some of you consider it an upgrade, but let's be honest here. Sidegrade.)

I also have a religious hatred against Fender as a corporation. Hate their business practices, hate their basses, hate their guitars, and (with the exception of the early blackface Bassman) hate their amps.

But I used the SB300 as the backline at a gig a few months back and I just have not been able to get that tone out of my head. Being able to dial in the overdrive just made my Rick shaging SING...

I dunno guys...talk me out of it...or talk me into it...

As I've said b4. .... One you get the hang of that overdrive and the gain & blend controls. ... It's effin wonderful. I love SVTs but I do consider it an upgrade of sorts. ... As it's almost like having two amps. Two awesome amps. Each as good as a SVT.
The VINTAGE channel....which is thick and lush, Then the whole nother monster in the active channel which is pretty much what you want it to be.
Scooped. .. glassy. ... full on grind. ... clean n punchy. ..
This footswitchable feature & TL that it's nearly 20lbs lighter (& that here in Aus it's much cheaper thana SVT-VR) is what swayed me. I was gonna get a VR.
But, I'll live with side grade too :thumbsup:
