Does "you people" include Mcbassdude?

:D

There's still a lot of posting by people that obviously haven't read the entire thread. Do us all a favor and do it before posting.

Does "people" include Mcbassdude?

Now I don't claim to be an expert on the birth of slap bass. But from everything I've read and interviews with Larry, it seems pretty clear he is widley accepted as the Father of Slap bass (electric bass). Crazy?
Now I'm sure this will start a whole other thread discrediting Larry Graham.
Oi:rolleyes:

Can you even see the word "think"? That may be the problem after all:

"And if Larry Graham told me "I was the first to --->>>think<<<--- of slapping" I would say "Go tell Milt Hinton that".

:D

Apples and Oranges! Just ask any DB player if his instrument of choice is the same as an electric bass. Plus the two techniques are so different, one would hardly work on the other's instrument.

That doesn't change the fact that he can't prove he's the first one to THINK of slapping.

Ninestring: I don't mean to be disrespectful or take anything away from your accomplishments, commitment to the bass community, or contributions to the evolution of the electric bass, but why is it so important that everyone acknowledges that you were first?

You know it, you have plenty of supporters and no one has produced evidence to the contrary.
And there will always be dissention on any controversy no matter how much evidence exists.

There are still folks who actually believe the earth is flat, for ****'s sake. Who would bother to continue to debate with them?

I just don't get what the problem is here.

Edit: Oh yeah, I remember...people LOVE to argue!

I don't argue. and don't be offened but, nothing can take away from my or anyone else's accomplishments.

I should be able to,as i originally did , state some facts about me , my bass,my techniques etc without anyone first assuming I'm , what was the TB term... yeah , a "Troll"

People who didn't make 7 strings before started making 7 strings and money from such an odd bass. Players are now getting recognized when they have a 7 string bass. Some people think that by me saying what i do ,it makes them look bad ,because in there minds , they were the guys who brought us the 7 string bass. i did all the developement and my bass is commercially viable-I play it all the time.

I think they need to know where the bass came from. Some try to allude to the idea they are resonsible for the 7 string bass. if you put in the decades of effort I have on the bass , you might want to correct that misinformation.

When Jauqo posted the question- I waited to see what would happen. I only replied when someone said the had a photo of a 7 from the early 80's. I came on to answer the question , and that's that.

I can accept that some people will not ever acknowledge my claims , but at this point ,as you say , most everyone gets the idea.

i will get my documentation to Ken Smith and we will figure that stuff out,but the point is mute .

Who has disputed your claim in this thread of being the first to own a 7 and the first and longest term player?

I don't recall seeing anyone disputing that yet some keep saying it's being disputed and you are being disrespected.

WHERE?

That's all I'd like to know. If it's not actually happening maybe you can stop saying it. If it is maybe it can be addressed.

Again, where in this thread is it happening? It should be very easy to point out... if it happened.

Really Brad, I've never said I'm always right. I just quoted YOUR sig. Your words not mine. They seemed quite apropos.

And you have steadfastly proved that you can't be wrong because you refuse to read.

I'd pay to see you face to face with Larry Graham and give him that earful.

I've spoken with Larry before and frankly he's never said anything this stupid (and since I know you can't follow this I'll spell it out again: he hasn't said he was the first person to THINK of slapping a bass). If he did I'd bet I wouldn't be the first person to mention it to him. As far as I could tell Larry lives in the real world though some of his fans may be every bit as overzealous and unaware as you.

You have relentlessly focused on a minute detail without giving an ounce of credit or respect to Garry. Seems like petty bickering to me.

Because you've relentlessy ignored that minute detail and continually retorted with a completely distorted view of what's happening in this thread. That seems beyond petty, then again maybe, even though it's been pointed out numerous times, you still don't see it. You just continue to ignore it and whine about disrespect that's more imagined than anything.

I was there in '78 and I saw with mine own eyes Garry on a 7 string bass. It was at least 10 years post before I saw anyone else with one.
Why is it such a big deal to give this talented pioneer his due?

Who isn't giving him his due, mcbassdude? Who's debating that he played a 7 in the 70's? Who is saying you didn't see what you said you saw?

Why do you continue with this nonsense? We get it... do you? Who the heck are you talking about?

Seriously, in this thread, *** are you talking about?

Honestly where is the issue in that?
So for all the years he's put into bass, for all the time he put into developing and playing 7 string it all comes down to one word "thought"?
Let it go man, let it go.
GIVE THE MAN HIS DUE!
PEACE

Have you let it go?

No... he can't have his due. Talkbass is far to mean for that.

OMG LOL ***

Most of the first two pages is about that timeline with all of the errors. As far as "an answer that became more viable towards the end"... I can't say I understand what that means.

Did you come across all of the disrespectful posts?

I poked at John because i want him to give us more than photos or a 12 minuuute track every 6 monthes.

actually, i also have for sale a 74 minute cd which i wrote all the lyrics, cowrote or wrote solo all the music, was the principal engineer and producer of, and co-mixed, along with a grammy winning engineer/producer (neil kernon). he liked our work so much he asked to produce us in the future. i've also sold a healthy 100+ of those cds to talkbass members alone. i just don't toot about it in every thread i participate in, nor do i require everyone who talks to me to acknowledge the fact that i have a cd for sale that i did so much of the creative and administrative work on. :)

as if that wasn't enough, i have another 74 minute cd of original music in the process of being mixed at this moment, with the same credits, except this one i will be mixing completely.

do you have a cd for sale with your work available? i'd be interested in checking it out.

oh, and i use every note on the bass i feel necessary to use. i'm not interested in being a clavinet player, or a stick player. i play the way i want to play, what suites my vision for my music, based on the fact that the band has 3 other players who also play unconventional instruments. come on, you have to admit, it's pretty ridiculous of you to assume that i'm somehow not utilizing my instrument to the fullest because i don't play the way you do.

lastly, that 12 minute instrumental that you're so quick to dismiss utilizes every note from the low f# an octave below to a high g 6 octaves above it. big deal - who cares how much of the instrument it utilizes? i've had over 3,000 downloads off of our webpage - that's a 12 megabyte download - in the past year alone. that's a much more impressive statistic than the number of notes i play simultaneously, imo. i composed and arranged this instrumental, including most of the non-solo guitar parts and drum parts, and performed all the keyboards as well as the bass parts.

i have to say, i'm pretty aggravated with your attempts to trivialize what i do - i have not treated you in that manner ever. it seems pretty hypocritical to me that you are clamoring so much for respect and yet don't offer it to anyone else.

I have to admit, Garry, JT has a legit beef here. I too thought your comments on him, in the post he refers to, were a little disrespectful, but I blew it off because I figured you and JT know each other better than I know either one of you, and you said you "poke fun at him", and maybe JT would take it as ribbing. Apparently not. :hmm:

Gentlemen to your corners. Fights over.... verdict nobody cares anymore.

Heres a good first my dad thinks he is the first to think of the minivan. is he.. we're still waiting for the check on that one. lol

From what i have read in this post Garry Goodman or his villianous alter-ego Ninestring (just kidding) seems very talented but realize tons of good music has been made without having to showcase virtouso (probably wrong spelling) talent.

Walking on the Moon- The Police
Magnificient Seven- The Clash
Time - Pink Floyd

All good songs that dont require tons of solo ability

just my two cents everyone

and Happy Holidays to everyone from the die-hard four stringer, to the person who is designing the worlds first 53 string bass

peace

Come up with some proof and a reciept and you will get a refund, or excuse yourself for making a mistake!!
This really bugs me. KSB supposedly took his deposit, gave him nothing, and doesn't remember the first time he was ever asked to build a 7? Something doesn't wash here.

All the claims/denials/whatever of inventing something aside, this statement on a public forum is a serious matter. And after all the mud that's been kicked up in this thread, I for one would like to see the receipts and letters posted as proof. Or at least statements from both parties as to the final resolution of the matter.

It may have happened; and Ken may have completely forgotten about it; and if that's true, I imagine Ken will refund the money; but if it is not true, to spit out something like this in public forum is slander (or is it libel?).

Ninestring's profile states he owns a Smith 4. I was under the perhaps mistaken impression that KS started building his own basses in 1980 or 81. Did ninestring buy the four before placing an order for a 7, or did he buy it from the guy who had already ripped him off? OK, maybe he traded for it, but it's a smaller side issue I'd also like answered.

Brad, why do you insist on continuing to insult my intellegence. I don't recall disputing your ability to read or comprehend. I haven't hurled innuendo or insults at you. I've simply been engaged in a discussion.
All I've asked for is to show some respect. What have I done to you sir to warrant these attacks on my ability to read or comprehend or to hold my opinion's?
I am not Garry, My name is Joe and I don't play a 7 string. I don't claim to have thought of or invented anything, yet because I hold my position and am not swayed by your insulting retorts you continue to disrespect me.
I think Garry is brilliant and I think he came up with the 7 first, Do I agree with every word or statement Garry makes? No
I'm getting so tired of arguing semantics with you.
So please I implore you to stop leveling assaults on my charachter or intellegence and we, You, Garry, all of us, try to keep what is left of this discussion above board?
You want to continue to argue not being able to prove who "thought" of it first well you know what you can't prove he didn't THINK of it first, none of us can. You can't prove either way if Larry Graham thought about slapping first. It's like arguing what came first the Chicken or the Egg. Pointless.
However the question at hand, who came up with the first and who has played it the longest, seems to have been answered and it would appear to be Garry.
So Brad if it makes you feel better, you win, he didn't THINK of it first, he just developed it 10 years before anyone else did, he just played it out since '78 giving him a 10 year head start.

Keep it civil
Peace

Let's not make mountains out of molehills, Garry and Ken are in contact as we write and are settling the claim amongst themselves. Ken said "as I can recall" he also said that sometimes things are right in front of you but you don't see them. If Garry is correct it is neither slanderous or liabilous. Read the posts and you will see they are working on this. If Garry is mistaken I'm sure he will be the first to post a retraction.
Peace
