I just found a fretless neck for my 87 Kubicki-this one has the drop D clasp which makes it ultra sweet. I don't think I'll be putting the fretted neck back on anytime soon..

That is a very cool looking instrument! Can you give us more pictures?

Gladly! I've been sold on these basses since they came out in 85. Phillip Kubicki got started at Fender in the early 60's and quickly became known for his necks. He spent the early part of the 80's designing this bass from the ground up. After the initial run and a few tweaks and it has remained exactly the same. I've had mine 20+ years.

The G, D and A are 32" scale, and the E/D is 36" scale. The D extension clasp is not unlike what you find on a double bass C extension, but this clasp is spring loaded and you can flip it on or off quickly while playing.

Passive and active settings, the ingenious tuner/bridge, the all over ergonimics, and the NECK. 26 plys of alternating grain hard rock maple topped with ebony. You can see the plys in the headstock shot. This is the most harmonically live instrument I've ever played. And it's pink to boot.

I've been short on comments lately, eh? There's just so much fretless goodness I can't say enough. Kind of like a wife: Some are hot, some are not, but they're all loved and capable of make beautiful music when caressed just right.

Count me in:

Wilkins Custom Chambered Fretless P/J, Mahogany with Maple top, Fralin pickups, Ebony board with partial fretlines. The color is a sort of copper/gold but Pat is in the process of refinishing it in '59 Burst with a Birdseye Maple headstock cap. It plays like a dream and sounds amazing!
