I'm getting back into playing after a few years break. My fiance has bought me a: new '06 Cort Artisan fretless as a birthday / early wedding present. The best type of shopping.. I picked it out & she paid :D. It's still in transit & should arrive by Wednesday. I don't have any personal shots yet obviously, so I've posted ad ones. I plan on getting a set of TI jazz flats, then I should be good to go. It'll be my first fretless.

These all look great. I have been toying with fretless for a while, but now I seem to be getting the hang of it. I rely on the fret lines (I pulled the frets and filled the slots) but maybe one day I will get away from the lines altogether...... maybe one day way into the future. Anyway, I am playing one that I made, but I really like the sound and the growl is addictive.

So what are your impressions? I'm really happy with mine, it sounds really nice and is great to play. Fairly light bass too. I recorded with it in the studio a couple years ago and the engineer was absolutely gobsmacked, he expected to sound terrible, and it sounded anything but.

Sounds wonderful. Great organic tone and can even dial in some "Jaco-tone" when it's called for.

It arrived monday, I told my fiance I was holding off to open it until she arrived from England in early Feb. But I had three days to test it out & still get a full refund. I decided to sneak in a mini trial :D, tested it out for about 5 minutes.

My initial brief impression: it's an excellent bass, extremely well made. I love the natural wood & it's lighter then a lot of basses I've had. I definitely consider it a sleeper fretless. It plays just as good if not better then some higher end much more expensive basses. Sadly Cort's still seem to suffer from the "cheap" stereotype IMO.

I've always been a big Cort fan. My first bass was a mid 80's level entry when I was 11 years old (nearly 29 now). I played an ex-girlfriends C/Curbow in 2001 which impressed me with the varied tones I could get from it. Over the years I've looked for another & got the typical attitude from music stores "they're cheap" etc. No where locally carries them.

I'm very happy with it, it seems to have much more of an upright tone over other fretless I've tried. I am sure after I get a set of Thomastik-Infeld flats on, it'll sound even better :)

I know what you mean about the sterotype. That's what this engineer had when I told him I was bringing in a Cort fretless to record with - it was also the reason he was so shocked at how good it sounded. This is someone with over 30 years of professional sound experience too... I've played a fretless Yamaha that was over double the price and I didn't like it as much as this little bass. Cort have really improved their overall manufacturing standards in recent years yet still suffer the stigma of being an entry level brand from times prior when they were just that.

Congrats on both the bass and the engagement. My wife got me an F-Bass AC6 for Christmas, and she keeps teasing that she expects to find it on her side of the bed any day now.
