The Grabber is back! : Gibson Grabber II

I don't see how the price is a good strategy, with the originals being for sale on Craigslist daily for 400 bucks.

Send me the daily links as I will buy as many 1970's Gibsons as I can for $400. I have been trying to buy a G3 for a long time, and less for $1000, they are getting very hard to find. G3, Grabber, Ripper. Set me up.

Anyways, $2000-3000 is waaayyy overpriced for a RI Grabber IMO, but the 1970's originals are generally in the $700-1250 range.

I bought one last summer and got it for just a little bit over $1500.

I bought this on a whim after my LPB was in the shop for 2 weeks. I have to say, its the best bass I have ever played or own, hands down.

However, I have the new Ripper 2 coming next week, so I am looking forward to comparing the two!

I hadn't even heard that they were doing the Ripper 2, I must have missed that somehow?

Looks ok, but you can tell the ad copy wasn't written by a bass player:

"The average weight of a Ripper II Bass body is 5.31 lbs, which is about average for a bass guitar, and provides balance, a solid feel, and brighter tones that prove compatible with the Ripper II’s special pickup configuration."

5.3 lbs would feel like a kids toy IMO.

"The coil of each pickup is made from ABS plastic, which is hard and durable and can withstand a broad range of temperatures."

Might just be me, bit it sounds like they're talking about the wrong part here....

Well I think they're correct, that's just the body's weight.
With Neck, hardwares, etc, it might sum up to 9-10 lbs.

I'll wait for the Epiphone versions.

Funny; I was thinking the same thing. MF has this Grabber Reissue for $1900. That's way too much...unless you're buying this as a collector's item, which I'm sure many folks are.

It comes with a special certificate of authenticity, limited edition case with white interior...sounds like a "don't even take the plastic off the case or open it, ever" type of purchase.

If Epiphone releases their version of the Grabber II, it'll be under $600 most likely and have 99% of the tone and same feel as the Gibson. Though resale value definitely won't be the same. ;)

The bass looks awesome and I'd honestly love to own one, but not for two grand.

...for $3192, I'd get a used Alleva Coppolo or new Sadowsky NYC.

:scowl:

Unbelievable....

I, personally, hope they don't sell a single one.

It was a totally mediocre instrument back in the late 70's, and not worth the 300 bucks they were charging then...as a vintage instrument...blah...

$3,000.00....ha ha ha! Well, if you're stupid enough to buy one, you deserve it.

:rollno:

I had one or two of each. The set-necked Ripper was by far the highest-quality piece of the three. The G3 was the one I would up playing the most, the neck profile fit my hand perfectly. The Grabber was the cheap, plasticky-feeling one. That big ol' pickguard warped a bit, just never really got on with it.

To choose THAT one to (sorta) reintroduce, and at that price, is preposterous. It's like if American Motors ignored the Javelin and AMX to re-introduce the Pacer.

If another old G3 fell into my path, I'd probably buy it just for sentimental reasons. I WOULD change that sharp-edged stamped bridge, though. Vintage value be damned.
