The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

Like you weren't doing that already? :D

I feel like I've made some real progress lately! I'm down to refreshing once every hour or two! LOL

Have a fair amount of preamp/DI's here.... including a few more not pictured.
Not all of these will be staying! Yikes.

Noble
Oracle
RNDI
Broughton Super Stack
Broughton P-15
Sushi Particle Accelerator
NUX Melvin Lee Davis (didn't fit in picture)
Atomic Bass Box (didn't fit in picture)
Retrospec Squeezbox

You've got problems brother lol.

I am grateful for the reviews from this thread and from the compressor thread. I now have some really great gear that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Thank you to those who contribute! Not sure my wallet (or spouse) agrees with my sentiment though. However, before these threads I spent a large amount on sub-par gear that just gets sold to try something else. Now I just need to figure out what bass to get next and which ones to sell off...

I reckon it's game! We have to guess what is staying and going...

Staying: Oracle (you just got one back!), NuX, RNDI (perfect with the Oracle), Broughton P-15, Retrospec Squeeze Box
Going: Noble, Atomic Bass Box, Broughton Super Stack
Unsure: Sushi Particle Accelerator

Am I close?

Hmmm. Adding a SSDI to the staple would end this dangerous Fender tonestacks scheme ! Cali comp seems working pretty nice with these, so does the LA-1A. In this game, i'd go for the next SSDI batch, and part with the Noble, Cali76, and Particle Accelerator. Haven't received mine (Sushibox) yet, but i know for sure SS is working very well with the Oracle. Well, i'd part too with the Squeeze Box, as for the price i'd expect a dead-quiet device, which seems not being the case. Would replace it with a PC-2A or a PDR for a NuX compact board. Seller's remorse are pretty expensive on the Squeeze Box though.

I've been thinking about how I might structure some type of audio sampling of each of these. I first started to record everything set flat (or as flat as possible). Frankly, I am not sure there will be a highly noticeable difference in many of these when set flat. Of course when you start using the EQ sections things start changing dramatically. Then I have compressors like the LA-1a which imparts a different sound and feel in one way or another in front of each.

Thoughts on what you'd like to hear?

I've been considering getting setup to record some clips of different gear as well.

One thing I'm considering, is recording in Stereo with effected signal hard panned to one side, and a dry uneffected signal hard panned to the other side.

Then people can pan back and forth between stereo channels to see what the exact coloration from the effect/hardware is vs a 100% dry signal.

Sounds good, but I don't know how useful people listening would find that, or if it would be too much trouble panning back and forth, or taking off one side of headphones at a time...

I know these don't have tubes and aren't as exotic as the preamps we've been discussing as of late, but I'll throw them out to The Great Preamp Gurus for discussion: Ampeg SCR-DI, Ampeg Classic Preamp, Barber Linden EQ?

Anyone have any particular experiences and/or thoughts?

5sg.

I've always gassed for the Barber Linden. Cursing myself for not getting one on special.
