The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

Well actually, in your post that is a BB800 (which I own) and that has an xlr line out (and in) on the back ironically.

I was thinking the Interbass Preamp pedal which has a TRS (when there seemed to be probably enough room for an xlr) and also the newer BB802 on which they moved the xlr line out from the back panel to a TRS on the front. Both of these TRS outs are doing double duty as a line out/headphone out.
**EDIT** even more astounding is that balanced out is the ONLY out to be used as either a balanced out or out to your rig. The other out is to drive a cab. So the routing options are extremely limited considering what it is supposed to be - preamp/routing tool.

I think it's actually supposed to be a super mini micro amp. Probably one of the smallest that exists in the world for Bass

I hear what you are saying, and it certainly is that. However reading the brief on the Quilter website gives the impression that it's trying to be many things:

"Today’s bass player faces new challenges, ranging from performing on “silent stages” to trying to get a good recording at home without bothering the neighbors. The INTERBASS from Quilter Labs is loaded with powerful features for going direct to PA and recording consoles, combined with a potent little power amp for driving speakers with enough volume for practice and small gigs. Combines the best features of the Bass Block signal path with Quilter’s latest direct-out connectivity setup."

Don't get me wrong - I love my Quilter BB800 and I'm not a Quilter basher. I just feeling like the Interbass could have been soooo much more if they had considered what they were trying to compete with in the market. Even the Power requirements of 24V 3A create the need for a cumbersome power supply. Using an IEC socket may have actually been easier for the end user.

Not to sound like a gear snob, the NuX looks good, but coming after my $450+ tube compressor, will a $180 Preamp/DI do the trick?
I get it. It feels a bit like putting a Ferrari engine into a gokart. The reality is that if it gets the job done, then so be it.
My LA-1A will likely feed a Sushi Box Particle accelerator and Radial Stagebug SB-2 at some point. The P.A. is a $120USD pedal. But because it is boutique and has a tube in it, somehow it seems in a different class to the MLD Pre. The MLD is a bit like the Joyo American Sound IMO. The stars aligned and a company that generally aims at a lower price point has hit an absolute homerun at a lower price point. (Yes I know the American is a clone, but I don't want to have that argument here. In some ways it eclipses the pedal it is actually cloning)

I've working out that I can get an MLD, LA-1A and D'Adario tuner onto a Nano powered by a Cioks 4, and I will most likely at some point put that together as an epic little tone/recording board. There are a few things stopping me from jumping on the MLD right now. I have no gigs booked, the MLD software is still not quite firing on all cylinders, and I am hanging out on a time frame of the Bergantino Pre as IMO this thing will be a game changer.

Question: Is there a reason for using the RNDI as opposed to the balanced out of a preamp pedal? I already have the RNDI and I'm interested in purchasing the Oracle. Is it worth waiting for the upcoming version with a balanced out or would it sound better to use the RNDI? thanks.

If I had kept my RNDI when I had one a few years ago, I’d have kept the Oracle I just sold. If you already have an RNDI, then save some $ and get a used Oracle v1. Just a thought.

It's really this simple. I think the Oracle/RNDI combo is the best sounding preamp setup when compared to the Noble, Shaw, Grace Alix, NUX, or SLO, etc. IMHO anyway. YMMV.

the RNDI at the end makes me not care that the Oracle doesn't have XLR out.

The RNDI does have a great sound. It had its own “color”. In a mix, through a PA, in a room full of people....will anyone notice. No.

I love the Oracle RNDI combo.
I was reading a review of the Radial Stagebug SB2 last week on sweetwater and someone had called it a Poor man's Neve. The only other DI they'd enjoyed more is the RNDI. Great if it's true for us SB2 owners, but without an RNDI I myself I can't say. Great little DI for sure but the comparision might be a stretch.

I had an SB1 for awhile with my passive basses. It was a very clean DI. The RNDI transformer just adds some great mojo, hard to describe. Of course with a LA-1A and an Oracle behind it, it's just a glorious combination that has not changed since I put it together.

I would mention, in a band context, may be hard to notice. At church sometimes it gets pretty quiet, and during those times the bass just sounds airy, plush, full, with a little sparkle on top, yet not overbearing.

If I already had an RNDI I wouldn't be looking at the option of retrofitting the Oracle. The RNDI/Oracle combo is already a sure and proven bet. There's no guarantee the Oracle DI portion will be as good. Of course there's the off chance that Micah does something amazing with it as well...after all, he built the Zephyr and the Oracle. But my guess is the only thing an Oracle with it's own DI would have over the RNDI combo is convenience. He can probable sell more Oracles since it's often a question or point of contention from people as to why it doesn't have a DI. Definitely wasn't a deal breaker for me as I knowingly and gladly ordered one without the DI and at time of placing the order no talk of adding one. Zero regrets. Had fully intended on buying the RNDI and even if I get it retrofit I most likely will still pick up an RNDI.

TBH...It's going to be hard to part with the Oracle for however long it takes if I do retrofit it. I played without it for a little bit yesterday and it just wasn't the same.

Of course with a LA-1A .........behind it
