The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

@SteveC - if I remember from past threads - you also play some bass synth. I play both bass and synth as well - and recently started to use the Jad Freer Luce - and LOVE it. It has both an input - and a pass thru - so my board feeds the input and I push my Novation Bass Station into the passthru. Works like a charm - sounds incredible - and is a bargain compared to the Noble and some others. No doubt the Noble is incredible - but given my needs the Luce has been a wonderful solution. Sound guys really love it.

Both are reffered to as a "B-15 in a box" so I wonder if a non tube box can have that sound with just a nice transformer?
Probably not as a B-15

The thing I notice most with some transformers is a 3d effect, especially in my RNDI it is very noticeable. Almost like a slight phase difference in some frequencies in a good way (have no idea exactly what it is).

Straight into my CP-12.

To those that are obsessing about incremental improvements in tone: is there something that triggers you knowing that you were previously happy? For me it is the absence of gigs. Gigging and constantly validating my tone im context helps me to relax, but no gigging starts this cycle of obsessing and over analysing that is unnecessary.
...and why I have more pedals than gigs these days, and I can't justify getting more of one without the other

having said that, the new SushiBox looks compelling......

It's nice to read through this thread and see that many, many other users have been through a similar journey with preamps to what I am now. It has definitely become a bit of an obsession of late. I went a little crazy over the weekend and ordered a few new toys. My current stable is:

feat. The Rev Nobelium
Avalon U5
Wayne Jones WJBP
Sushi Box Finally v3
Caveman BP-1 Compact

What I have on the way:
Arkham Oracle V2
Mesa Boogie Subway+ Preamp II
Booya! Amplification Filament
Walrus Audio Mantle
Demeter VTBP-201
Sushi Box Mayday
3Leaf Audio Enabler
Trickfish Minnow
Broughton Audio Archetype
Alembic F-1X

What I want:
Shift Line Olympic III
Jule Amps Simone
Noble

It'll be a hell of a classifieds ad if/when I settle on one (or two..... or three...)

Great checklist!

Looking forward to your choices.

Honestly, that shopping list of incoming preamps is beyond imaginable.

The Mesa Subway+ seems extremely promising to me, I would really like to test it, but it hasn't arrived at Thomann yet.

Yesterday I was in the studio with the band, the producer called us to discuss some settings before mastering, and yesterday he also selected which bass track would be on the recording. I had three affected tracks and one directly in the console with a Neve RNDI.

One was played with Ibanez ehb1505ms, cali76, dcx and sansamp, the second with Stingray 5 hh on inner coils (position 4), cali76, dcx and sansamp, and the last was also a Stingray, but on position 1 (bridge), with cali76, dcx and darkglass micortubes x ulta (with the Nolly Mega Meld IR). In the end, the last one was chosen for the song, meaning he was the most convincing, the song being a nu metal one, it seems that Darkglass was the winner for my bandmates and the producer.
With so many options on the market today, it's really hard to make a final configuration, we often end up making pedalboards based on the project we're working on.
