As far as onboard controls go, that's a really smart setup, much better than most Ibanez active controls.This is my best guess:

I was thinking of putting a bid on this unit since the start price is only 100 bucks. Can anyone tell me what model this one is??

thanks IngerAlb. It looks like that indeed with the phatII EQ knob, well for 100 I may just get it because the reviews on the passive version are pretty good from the consensus here on TB. if the preamp is nasty, I'll just wire something else in there. 
I had a 205 and it was a very decent bass Ibbys are great basses (for the right ppl). Even their entry level basses are ok. The only issue I've ever had with a "cheapo" was related to a BTB205 (small intonation problems); other than that, these are worth a try.

huh, well nobody put a bid in so i won it for 99 bucks, no big deal if the tone is not me, as long as the neck is solid I have a large jackson p/j partsbin 
That black one's really hot. I've been exclusively playing my one an only fretless for the past few months. They're really addictive, expecially with the right half round strings or flats. Did that bass come originally as a fretless, or did you replace the finger/fretboard?
Well, I don't think so. This EQ has the worst matched frequences on any preamp I've ever seen. Also they are really too wide... IMO preamp on its own sounds poor too, so I took it away from the bass and going to invest on some booster - because pickups are very quiet.
evhest tell me please when exacly was your Musician made. Mine comes from Aprill '80 and the neck pickup is much more close to the neck.
Okay, so it's a smart setup in theory. What you said there is one of several reasons why I choose not to have an onboard EQ when possible.
I upgraded the pups in my GSR200 to Dimarzio DP126's and added a home-built preamp/buffer. It was easy to do once I figured out a little amplifier theory. The buffer is a single JFET running off a 9V battery and is based on the famous 'Tillman' preamp with some tweaks of the resistor values to match my transistor. I get 3-6dB of gain. The preamp has no equalization (easy to add), I just use the passive tone controls that came with the guitar originally. In fact, all the passive wiring was left intact except I replaced the Ibby 500K pots with Dimarzio 250K. The Ibby pots had a nice damped action and smooth control but there was a dead spot in one of them so I replaced them both.
The guitar sounds great with the upgraded pups and buffer/preamp. I can email you the design if you're interested. The circuit board is about the size of a postage stamp.

hey man can you give me a number please??? i got an SR300 ive been putting it to work lately with some nice tracks and a cheap practice amp, but it still is doing work after about a half a year.

Same body and finish as my 205 w/o the B string and P/J instead of J PU's. The Phat II is very useful. I crank it slowly to add sustain and use it to make my practice BX15 handle the B much nicer.
It's my workhorse. The quality is amazing for 250 US.
he guys! i need all your help! shoul i get a fender jazz? an ibanez sr500? or sr700? ive been playing bass for 2 years, im 13, and i play funk, punk, (indie) rock, classic rock, and some metal, but not much. and is thediffeence between the 500 and 700 just looks?? or does the 700 have an upgraded pup?
