hey guys, im just wondering is there a significant difference in the tone of the smiths with say a 7 piece neck and 5 /7 body wings, vs one with a 5 piece neck and 3 piece body wings?
would yu say that the smith tone is pretty consistent across the board?

I agree with jason. I've owned 3s, 5s, and 7s, in theory more laminations=greater stiffness, less punch, more articulate high end faster attack. In practice I'm all confused, because the 7pcs body, 5 pcs neck smith I have now is the most punchy and dark one I've had. woods have always been maple outer with variations of maple walnut and mahogany center.

If you can play it before buying to be sure you'll like the tone.

Also there seems to be a big difference between kens 4, 5, & 6 strings probably due to the pickup windings.

Yeah I'd say the tone generated from his pickup placement is consistent IMO.

It has a modded EMG preamp in it that I put a push-pull active-passive bypass for those no-battery days. What a bass!

Just got recently a BSR5P cocobolo top & back with mahogany core, fretless.
Sound is deep and fat yet articulate with sweet highs. Great wood combo for fretless but I'm sure it'll sound as great on fretted.

Sweet! My Lacewood/ mahogany core CR6 has a similar tonal description. I keep meaning to post a few pics of her.

Congrats!

Hey Jeb,
This one is much different than the q/maple EG6 I got from you. Both with mahogany core, the maple tops + extra neck mass produce a more aggressive high end, strong low mids with piano-like sustain while the cocobolo yields subtle highs with pronounced lows. Maybe the finish has to do with it as well.

Here is my new Black Tiger Elite, so happy

Am I able to get a Club Number please?

Also, I do have a question, the b-string doesn't seem to be quite as bright as the other strings , is this normal? Maybe it could be the b string is a bit dead? Any other ideas, as I've heard they are meant to have an amazing B string.

Will post a couple more pics below

:p

get you a new b string. while I've had nothing but great luck with smith taper cores, I do know a friend who got a set with a dud B string out of the package.

Make sure the B string is not twisted. To check loosen string and remove at saddle let it unwind then re-seat without twisty.

Gorgeous! Congrats.

I've had several bad smith B taper-core strings. I'm not sure what the story is, but I know they're are out there.

Before you replace the B string, try lowering the pickups a little bit...or a lot and then bring them back up. Pickups too close to the strings cause all sorts of weird problems.
