Take a look at my super rare ken smith collection. The 85 is the first shedua bass ken ever did and there are less than a handful of BMTs that were made in a 4 string. This one is a super rare cocobolo top and back with mahogany core. The sweetest sounding four you will ever play.

I dont think I have ever seen a 4 string BMT Elite...

Black Tiger 5 (4A crotch walnut). And Limited BSR 5EG Flame Cherry top & back, Walnut core and Lacewood veneer

I was told this 5EG flame cherry is one of 2 limited flame cherry basses made from Ken's long history (one is my 5 string, and another is 6 string with Ken's signature, on sale in Japan now)

So, am I #33 ?

Thanks. There are less than 10 of these that exist. I have only seen 2, mine and one that was ebony with a maple core. The 4 string is pure butter. I need to sell it, but I just can't. It is beyond insane in playability and tone.

I thought that was cherry...very nice. I've got a custom bass being made with a cherry body/top so I recognized it on yours. Looks beautiful.

I'd like to know if you guys play your Smith basses with the pickup balance at the center or do you favor one pickup in particular?

I have found that my preferred tone is when I favor the neck pickup slightly. Usually I don't like to do this on other basses but on the Smith the sound is a bit smoother like this. Maybe it's due to the setup on my bass with the bridge pickup being quite close to the strings. Just curious about how you guys play your basses?

This all really depends on what sound you like and what your end goal is. Yes, the Smith pickups are shifted toward the bridge. Which, is what produces that signature growly tone. To smooth that down, yes, could favor the neck pickup a bit. On the Smiths that I have owned..I have generally played with them centered and then changed my hand position to change the tone. If I needed to "de-Smith" the tone for something. I would cut the mids on the pre and blend towards the neck pickup though.

+1 for Rodneyat. just yesterday I was playing through an rig that was way too midrange heavy and had no tweeter. I ended up leaving all the EQ flat on the bass and rolled the blend towards the neck pickup a bit. This gave me lots of classic low-end thump.
Normally, I'll leave the blend, bass and treble on flat and adjust my sound using the mid-range knobby.

I generally play my smith with the blend slightly favoring the neck. I also do what Rodney said, to de-smith I drop some of the mids. I've been monkeying with the dip switches on the pre, but I think I left the mid in the "wide" setting which should be default.

I use Smith Rock Masters, medium. I've tried a few other brands (DR, MTD) but went back to the Smiths because they have a very even tone accross the entire frequency spectrum, and they are also pretty easy on your frets for a stainless steel string.

I've tried a few different brands over the years, Rotosound, GHS, LaBella, but I always go back to the Ken Smith Tapered core Stainless. I think they sound the best on the Smiths.

I like DR for my Fenders ,and D'addario for Roscoes, but smiths for smith! that's my plan
