A little boutique like that obviously caters to a different crowd than to a major retailer.
Places other than Talkbass.

to be honest, the darryl jones skyline (1300$ new) and USA (4000-5000$ new) were to expensive...
i bought a fender marcus miller jazz bass, put a sadowksy preamp in it and changed pick-ups (seymour duncan) the bass+plus preamp cost me about 1300-1400$ and it sounds sooo good, so much better than the darryl jones and it's much more versatile... i think the darryl jones model was just to expensive and darryl himself dindt liked the way lakland dealed with it, i mean it's ridicilous to sell a passive jazz bass 4 string with block inlays for 4000-5000$...come on...it's laklands own fault

Hardly anybody buying a bass something because its signature model.
(Thats for bass players, I do see with other products in other industries that are signature models that people buy a lot more because so and so users it...Which is fine, no big deal really)
I will say that the DJ was one of the nicest Jazzs I have tried.
(I have tried just about all of the major brands and a ton of the smaller builders).
BTW: I'm skimming through this thread.
I'm not trying to be antagonistic but someone said something about not seeing Laklands or Sadowsky's out side of TB. Well...Aghh...You must not be looking brother I see enough of them out there.

Im not going to agree or disagree with that but i know probably around 10-12 other bass players personally and none of them had ever heard of Lakland before they saw my basses. Neither had i until i saw some 55-01's in a shop a few years ago and then came here to see what they were all about.
Ive never had a bass player come up to me and know about Laklands where as when im playing my P5 people come up all the time to talk about it.
I also always look to see what the bass players are using when ever i see bands on TV or live and i cant think of anyone playing a Lakland other than one or two session musicians and the Lakland artists.
This of course doesn't prove anything, its just my experience.
If one is a subscriber of Bass Player (although I'm guessing many are not), Lakland or Sadowsky (+ many other boutique basses) would have surely been on your radars! I knew of Laklands long before I joined Talkbass! I remember when they first came out! There was a huge buzz in the industry about them, IIRC!

That is not the case at all. Lakland and Darryl have a great relationship and the price of a USA Lakland DJ is not a problem with those who bought one(or more than one).

I see laklands all the time. I would assume that a large majority of the people who have never "seen" them probably have, and just wrote them off as another fender. I would assume this is the same for sadowskys as well. If you look, you will see them all over.
Who actually reads Bass Player?
I'm sure people buy it, but who actually reads that wonderful publication?

I'm not saying I see them on every corner.
However there are lots of little live venues where I live and see different players with both often enough.
Lakland started out with their own bass before the fenderesque signatures.
Anywho... I had heard of Lakland before joining TB, but one of the sole reasons I joined TB was to do some more research on Lakland before I decided to buy one. I have not regretted my decision.
I like the color of the headstock. I was meaning a colored headstock sans the name Daryl Jones on it.

Laklands are pretty rare in the shops over here so you would really need to know about them in order to get hold of one IME.
Come to think of it i hadn't heard of any of my rigs manufacturers before coming here. MarkBass, Epifani, Schroeder, Lakland were all new names to me even though i had been playing for 20+ years.
I love my DJ5 and wouldn't part with it for anything - it's my favourite bass. I really hope they continue to be made in some form.
I'm guessing you don't but many actually do. I've been a subscriber since it's inception! Granted the publication has gone downhill lately but it's still a useful and informative tool. I'm an information seeker and like to know what's out there. Can't speak for anyone else!

Take a look at the Lakland artists pages, and also their enthusiasts pages. Nice mix of young and old players. And there are plenty of younger men and women playing Laklands in "name" bands who don't make the fact widely known. Nate Query of The Decemberists plays a JO. Economic reality does put even Lakland Skylines out of the reach of many players, I guess. If you can snag a Squire for $300, that $700 skyline looks pretty expensive, especially if you're working a minimum wage job and not living at home. That said, I think $700 compares favorably with the $300 you would have spent for a fender 40 years ago, before discounting became widespread. I paid $150 for my first used Fender in 1965, and I saved for months to get that. Minimum wage was $1.30/hr then, but I was making the big bucks -- $25 a night. twice a week -- playing in a bar band with my Gagliano/Hofner version of a P bass.
I'll add that I seem to be the only one I've seen actually play a Lakland in my area! But to be honest, a good percentage of bass players only know and see what's in their local music stores. But I've also seen some bands in my area where the bassist played a Smith 5, a Carvin 5, a Roscoe 6, Peavey Cirrus 5, a Specter 5, Tobias & a Fender Marcus Miller among other high end basses! They know about them somehow!
