I am a gigging bass player, most guys I know that don't gig, don't choose not to gig it's usually due to family, work related or health reasons.
Is this generally true?
I also know some that don't play in bands because musically they can't be flexible.

When I picked up bass, being in a band never crossed my mind. Besides the fact I don't feel like I'm good enough to play with people; I just don't want to. My bass has become a very personal thing to me and I'd like to keep it that way.
I can't speak for other people, but I know I don't get out and play much because I'm a perfectionist and also I'm not super highly social. I do get out and jam with others from time to time, which is always fun, but I get great satisfaction from and pouring over a piece on my own until I get it just the way I want to hear it. I dunno, call me weird if you'd like, but that's my idea of fun.
I was working on a YouTube project for awhile where I challenged myself to try and learn a song and post it within a week. Then I started taking jazz lessons and the yt project has gone on the back burner since then. I have started it back up recently, but I'm going to take my time with the pieces now and really nail them down before I post them. I'm spending more of my time studying my lessons these days.
How often do ya'll use an amp?
I only plug in once every couple weeks, mainly because I often pick up my bass right before bed.

Yeah, every few days anyway. I play into my computer a lot so the amp only gets used sporadically.

About 98% of the time. It is fun to play without it once in awhile, though.
It's been weeks now....I play every day. For hours.It sits near me or in my lap while I watch TV, whenever there's a lull or a commercial, I'm at it again.
I simply love the thick,fat,deep sound my ancient stings make all on their own...Then again, I rarely ever use a pick.
I'm not sure but for me I just don't have an interest in being in a band guess it could be I'll be fifty in April . I'm retired and I want zero commitments no matter how fun they might be but I love bands and enjoy seeing them perform.
Yeah, a lot of it boils down to that for me too. I don't want the commitments (i.e. headaches) that go along with a band unless I happen to stumble on to something that's "just right". Therefore, I fly solo. I'm 45, played the game, just don't have the time or desire to deal with it anymore. I just wanna enjoy my music.
58 here. Did the band bit as a gitard player in my youth. Picked up the bass almost a year ago. Gigged a few times with a local singer/songwriter/guitarist friend at some of the smaller venues along the oceanfront here in VB. Have played a couple gigs with a larger group. Have more fun just snagging songs for the iPod and jamming out by myself. Practice daily after work for about a hour. Moving soon so will not have any gig opportunities. Ok with me. Only did it to help out a friend. Requested no pay, as I just do it for fun.
Yep. Lived here for 4 years. Been coming down each summer since 1998. Have 4 timeshares that cover the month of August. Works out well. Move a few blocks down the beach every Saturday! Get a different view... Have been renting them out for the last 4 years while we lived here. 1 block off the beach. Guess we'll be using them again starting this year...

I play professionally, but the last 10 years my successful efforts have been solo, I'm actually going on tour next week and am once again playing the music solo (complimented by a vj). I don't do it for the money, it's for love.
I can't find anyone else serious enough to tour with- otherwise i'd have a full band.
I feel pretty damn lone wolf these days, that's for sure (and why I checked out this thread)....

Count me in please. I am in two bands, but for logistical reasons we don't get together very often. I really enjoy playing by myself, learning new songs, coming up with my own basslines. Paul is one of my favorites and I have learned several Beatles songs. In fact, All My Loving was the first song I ever memorized on bass. Recently learning Jamerson lines. I tend to play through my rig at home, although I have to turn it down later at night. Sometimes I play on my ABG to keep the volume down but still hear the vibes. Most of my time right now is playing by myself, so this club fits me well. Thanks for starting it.
