I'm approaching 49. I've started playing the guitar (classical at first) aged 9, and took up the bass about one year and a half ago. That has been a revelation! Music is my life's main passion, and still, in all this time, I never joined a band. Only played at home with a friend on occasion or participated in some jam sessions (3 since I play the bass, none before that). So I guess I qualify for this club...
To answer some of the questions raised in the course of this thread:
I now have four basses (Squier VM Jaguar Short Scale, the one that started it; Squier VM Jazz 77; Cort Arona 4 OPBB, my favourite; and since three weeks a Cort B4FL fretless, a new challenge).
I mostly play with headphones through a Yamaha THR10, along with my Ipod. I also use a Vox Amplug Bass, and I have a Hartke A35 practice amp that I use on occasion.
Most of my bass playing is along with songs on my Ipod. I have a playlist of some 350 songs with nice bass lines that I set on shuffle play and that I jam on. My goal is not so much to learn the exact bass lines, but rather to come up with something that fits the song. When I get going like this, in general after 10PM, I'm off for anything between one and two hours (standing up, always), until I start feeling too tired and uninspired. I try to do this on average five days out of seven.
Recently, I'm considering learning some songs to produce bass covers on YouTube, to set myself a more structured challenge. Later, I may even try working out some songs in multitrack / virtual band mode, but that's still far off.
My main reason for functioning this way is my personality. I'm very introverted and quite a loner in most things I do. And recently, family life with two young sons limits the possibilities even more (hence the timing of my playing).
So can I have a number please?
