I played in a band in the late nineties, then didn't play at all for over a decade, until I was asked to pick it back up to jam with some teacher buddies. Now we barely ever get together, so most of my playing is done on my own.

I'd actually love to have a band, but I just can't do whitey-blues or frat-rock, which is all I can seem to find where I live. So, it looks like I'll be learning more guitar to go with the bass, so I can do the kind of songs I want to do and record them myself.

Anyhoo, can I get me a number?

Rarely if ever have I seen a disparaging comment from you regardless of the topic or the other posters.
I'm a firm believer in karma and treating others as you'd like them to treat you. You set a great example for all to follow. Hats off to our club founder.

Yup, I go through periods of not wanting to play. Not hating it, just times when I'll pick up my bass and play a bit and it doesn't do anything for me. Sometimes for weeks. It's scary, because you think it might not come back. I always find it does though. And, worst case scenario; say it doesn't. You can always find something else that's fulfilling.

If I don't feel like it, i find it best not to force it. After all, this is the lone wolf thread, you have no obligation to play towards a band or anything.
In my case it mostly comes back when I hear a great piece of music, or a groove I want to jam along with.

I also find motivation (in anything actually) to be a bit of a feedbackloop. When I just unproductively mess around, I'll lose interest after a while. But when I put the work in and learn a new technique or song, or I finish recording a new track I got motivation up the wazoo. So perhaps it is a question of momentum. Maybe listen to some music you normally don't listen to, and try to figure out something new?

There's loads of music out there, some of which you miht have never even considered listening to but really tickle your fancy. Hiphop. Crooners. Ambient. Bebop. Swing. Speedmetal.
Maybe put some musicstyle you're not familiar with on your portable electronic music listening thingamajig, see if you can't find something new to expand your horizons?

After 40 years of being a Lone Wolf, my status will be briefly interrupted as my old bandmate and I are going to play for our 40th high school reunion. It has been interesting as we used dropbox to send recordings back and forth to each other. Since we live 1000 miles from each other we won't have a chance to rehearse with each other in person. This should be interesting, to say the least. Certainly a Lone wolf style of preparing for an evening. When we were last playing the technology was dropping the needle on the record over and over again while we picked everything out by ear. Now we use the internet. Anyone else used this method of preparing? I am a bit nervous at no rehearsals in person, but I think it will be OK.

I don't need a number, but am a member of this cool club in spirit. I started playing at age 50 and like to jam with my son and one of my work buddies, but mostly enjoy playing alone either with an ipod or just improvising. A lot of times I dont even like to play somebody elses song. I enjoy making stuff up as I go. I suspect a lot of piano players do that.

That's good advice I'm going to stay away from the Beatles for a little bit that should do it.
