Great episode. They used a wall of Meyer 18" subs for that. And for the record, they didn't really go down to 5Hz. They tried, but their output at 5Hz wasn't all that remarkable. Did you notice they had to seal the ports to go that low.

PandaFist, I just listened to your band, and now I get it, you need an SVT-CL or any high power tube head, you probably won't even need an overdrive pedal, you'll just have to play loud and you'll get all the distortiom you want, much like a guitar head.

i had huge issues myself with blowing drivers. some were manufacturing defects, some were limitations of the equipment i was using, and other times it was technique.
my right hand techniques goes from barely touching to steve harris clacking, my basses are all pretty hot (emgs, or stringrays). i use distortion and octave sometimes. this causes a huge mess when combined with the wrong cab, head, etc.
i once had a ampeg 350 head. it was happy as can be when it was powering a single 15" cab. the problem was that when i hooked it up to multiple cabs or a really power hungry cab, and turned up the volume and eq (combined with a hot input bass and sloppy technique) i "underpowered" and was close to damaging my head and cabs.
i also had really crappy luck with classic ampeg 410s. just a real farty cab, never liked it, always let me down. if going ampeg 410, go with the pr410hlf armor plated one. sounds great!
2 things solved my dilema. bye bye ampeg 350, hello gk neo 212s, hello (again) GK 1001rbII, hello zoom B2 medium limitor setting. this allowed me to put my tone at a slightly squashwed, slightly lower level into the front of a head (with tons of headroom) and into cabs where i control what goes to the tweeter (GK neo 212). the zoom b2 limitor setting (medium) really helped me a lot. i have had 98% no issues since doing this.
as far as loudest speaker. so many variables,because sometimes the best drivers matched to the wrong box, sound like poo poo. check the xmax rating. but i might say EV cast frames.

Best prices I've seen when in the market for speakers was BLTSound.com They gave me the best price on an Eminence DeltaLite Neo 12

The one Marty McFly used in the beginning of 'Back to the Future'. You could tell it was really loud, cause when he played it, the sound from the speaker blew him up off his feet and into a pile of junk or something.

Interesting problem, a bit hard to diagnose from cyberspace, with so many variables. Lots of good info already.
My personal experience with similar issues resulted in me playing through an SVT-II and 2 8x10's, using the green muff or splitting the signal and using a marshall half stack for distortion. This was when I was young-I miss the sound but NOT the lugging. I'd HIGHLY recommend an SVT and 2 8x10's. I've never been louder with less effort from the amp. Still LOVE my green muff, though now it goes into an Ashdown abm500 and an eden 212xlt. You might consider a high powered used ashdown abm series as well, but check the 8x10's out regardless of amp. I even used a chopped 59 bassman reissue (head made from combo by previous owner) into an 8x10 and though clearly not as loud it sounded KILLER overdriven.

have to agree with the 350 issue not being enuff power. In addition you have the problem of the HE4x10 being a sealed cab with bad efficiency.... you don't get out what you put in! I used the 350 with an Ampeg pro 4x10 and when you push the amp it dies... Sounds like you need an Ampeg 8 x 10, or an SWR 6 x10 (or any other major brand's bigger cabs) . BUTT Me thinks you need to upgrade your head....The power amp/preamp suggestion is a good way to go. or the svt cl. The Crest amps are a good choice, so are the QSC RMX amps...Or if you got lot's of bucks you can go with some crown amps!! I know of a music store that can get you a good deal on the QSC RMX (and no I'm not a dealer) just tryin to save you some money!! Either way me thinks you need to spend some money here!! this thread is getting long, so i understand yall not reading the whole thing, but as I already said, we play TOO often and in all kinds of weird venues to make an 810 practical.
I already had one. the tone was the best i've had so far, but...
My set-up HAS to be modular.
My band-mates bitched and moaned everytime we played about having to help me up or down stairs with the 'fridge'
and since our practice space is indeed in a basement, it requires carrying it more than my back can handle. sucks.
I'm researching different cabs and speakers to get what I need. But i kinda have my heart set on the SVT classic head. I just think I need to own one at some point in my life to actually call myself a bass player. like a right of passage or something.

Cool! Sounds like the head swap made a BIG difference, and that your cabs may not have to be replaced at all (unless you want to try to match the 8x10 sound with another 4x10). Sorry I missed the part about your rig needing to be modular. I'm curious to see how this turns out so keep us posted.
That's not the flux capacitor; that's Mr. Fusion. Mr. Fusion works for bass amps too, but then your amp only plays bad jazz too fast.
...then get a REAL SVT. The Classic is NOT the same thing.
Those speakers Bill mentioned will cure that, but will also cost more than your whole rig a few times over. The bottom line is that you are trying to get too much sound from too little amp AND speaker capability. The reason people keep mentioning 8x10's so much (even though said you couldn't handle them) is that there are few other single cabs that put out so much volume relative to input.
Right now, you have a crappy amp powering two crappy cabs that you keep blowing because you're trying to get more volume out of them than they can provide. Any upgrade you make will be an improvement, but the degree of improvement won't be much until you spend some serious dough.
Yep PBG, it all comes down to dough. All it takes is a credit card! 
2 G's will set you straight for life. IMO get a SVT II and a Berg NV610.
I went a little more expensive route, but my amp GAS is squashed forever. (I only need a smaller cab for gigs like Im gonna play tomorrow night (college grad party) where my set up might be a little overkill! Oh well
