Please, if I had a Nickel for every time I've posted a picture or a link to a Mike Lull, I'd be able to purchase that Modern 5 fretless instead of staring at it longingly while trying to find out what kind of security system the Atlanta Bass Gallery has... :smug:

I keed, I keed... about the Security System part. The Nickels, I'd be on that bass like white on rice. And as for Burnt Orange Metallic, I am so getting a bass in that color one of these days! :D

For anyone who is interested, there's a nice Lull Modern 5 Quilted top, Amber burst with rosewood board selling used at my local GC. This thing is LIGHT!! Featherweight, my guess is sub 8 pounds easy. You can find it by searching Mike Lull under Used Gear on the Guitar Center webpage. Plays and sounds fantastic. If I was in the market right now for a 5er, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat.

That looks to be one nice M5 (if needing an oiling of the fretboard, STAT! ;) ) but to be honest about how Lulls are selling in the market right now, asking $1,799.99 is about $300-$400 too much, especially when it's not in the hands of Bass Northwest or Bass Central but a Guitar Center where the odds of it getting dinged & banged up increase day by day.

There's also a crazy nice M5V in Marietta, Georgia that's Black with a Blocked Maple fretboard and matching black headstock - basically a Lull/Lee 5-string. They're asking $2,050,00 for that which considering the Blocked neck is a much more reasonable price.

Seriously, someone loan me some money. I've been here since 2001, I'm good for it! :D

I thought the same thing until I bought a Lull PJ5. Same neck feel as my Sadowsky PJ5, but the extra inch makes all the difference in the world in tone.

^ Agreed. If you get the chance to check out a Lull, I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised. It's a very balanced and comfortable instrument. The only thing I notice as a concession to the scale is the overall length of the bass. It's a snug fit in some gig bags, and for a short guy like me, reaching that 'D' tuner can be a bit of a stretch. :)

Last night I had a dream that someone gave me a Lull M5V in natural, and it had the best B string that ever existed.

Of course, it was only a reminder of the last Lull I played at Winter NAMM.

Some of the best basses I've ever played!

I just ordered a T5 - it's 49" overall length, and the only gig bag I can find that works is the RB #314 - 49" interior size. A shame that their new Continental line is only 48.5". Next task is to get Case Extreme to custom build an outer shell.

If you strap the bass up high the D tuner is a long way down the neck. :)

Just did an A/B between my Fender Am Dlx 2010 with Nordies and the Mike Lull M5 Amber burst rosewood board with Bart pups. That bass is smokin'!!!!! It is sooo effortless to play, it's just a dream. Not sure on the weight, but next to my 9.7 lb Fender, it felt a couple pounds lighter, so maybe 7.7 lb??

I was seriously considering picking it up and selling the Fender. I've had several Lulls in the past and the B on these things have no rival and the fast playability is unmatched in Fender-copies that I've played. If you like to solo or noodle, this is the bass for you!

In the end, I had to say no. It really is modern sounding like the name suggests. Much like the Sadowsky Modern is to the Vintage, it has that more Ken Smith style focused thing going on. My Fender was way bigger sounding and more vintage, though not as clear and defined. Both were just awesome, but completely different tonal goals.

Anyone looking for that modern sound will NOT be disappointed in this bass. It's gotta few dings here and there and the board definitely needs some oil (Sadowsky recommends Planet Waves Hydrate), but it's certainly worth the bones. Just thought somebody out there might considering a new bass, for what you get with Lull instruments, at 1799 this is a steal, IMO! It won't last long! I'm not trying to sell this for any other reason than I want somebody out there to be happy with a great Lull bass! ;) (Guitar Center website, in the Used Gear section)

Man, I love Lull basses. I must have more in the future!

My very first bass was a late 80's lefty oly-white MIJ Fender Jazz bass. She was my first true love, but, through stupid youthful experimentation, I ruined her.

Since that happened, I've tried lots of other basses... nothing has been able to fully recapture that love until my recent purchase of a very rare lefty Fender Custom Shop '64 NOS.

It is by all intents and purposes a PERFECT example of a passive 4-string J-Bass.

The resurfacing of my J-Bass passion has been budding for several years... but the Fender has single-handedly reignighted my love for the jazz bass platform.

Having said all of that, I recently did something rather crazy...

I have a friend who had a lefty M5V in mint condition (literally practically unplayed), and since he never thought of himself as much of a "J-Bass Guy" I asked if he might want one of my basses in a trade.

Well... several phone calls and emails later, I have one less custom finish Lakland 55-94 and he has one less Lull M5V.

This is the EXACT bass I'm getting:

Swamp Ash
Maple neck
Maple Board
Aguilar OBP-3
SD Basslines S/C

Several people have told me that I'm probably insane since my 55-94 was a tonal wet dream and probably my easiest playing bass out of all of them... but... I couldn't help it. Honestly, the 55-94 hasn't been touched in almost 6 months... she'll always have a place in my heart... I've just fallen out of love, I guess.

Meanwhile, I have been DYING for an amazing maple board Jazz bass 5'er for practically ever... and, when you're a lefty, the good ones don't come along too often.

So, upon searching and reading these forums, I've read that if you're a "J-Bass Guy" then a Lull is pretty much the cream of the crop. I honestly feel like I made the right decision.

I'll have her on Thursday and will post a full report...

Actually, YOU have had a LOT to do with my excitement over this deal.

You and I don't even play much of the same styles of music, but I value your input because I can tell that you're passionate about your gear and how it inspires you, and you're able to articulate it in a way that demonstrates knowledge and experience.

This board is definitely better having you around.
