What is the third knob down? It's usually vol/vol/passive tone/EQ stack or vol/blend/passive tone/EQ stack. The passive tone is also a push/pull active/passive switch.
I've only had M4Vs so maybe it's different on the 5s.

Just looked at Mike's website and it looks like the 5 strings have a 3 band EQ, so the third knob is mids with the push/pull for frequency selection.

No - the mid-frequency switch would be worthless without also having the ability to boost/cut that chosen frequency.
So - a stacked-pot was installed: the mid boost/cut is on the bottom, with the passive tone control stacked on top.
That stacked pot control setup doesn't allow for the regular push/pull type of selector for the mid frequencies -
so a mini toggle switch was added to control plate for that purpose. (see photo)

Gotcha. Thanks for replying! So it sounds like one switch had the mids, and then one switch was the tone. Similar to what came on my Fender American Elite P Bass except that it works in both active/passive modes. So, were you happy with the results? My previous Bass was a Sadowsky Metro line and it had a passive/active tone control on it that I really liked and got used to using. Maybe I just need more time on the lull to dial in the sounds I am looking for. I really like the SD pups, but they are pretty bright in passive mode and it would be nice to have a tone knob to roll off some of the brightness. Thanks again for your input on my question!
Yup - in passive mode, I also 'need' a passive tone control - to tame the harsh high-end from roundwound strings, especially for certain styles. I also have the SD single-coil pickups in my M5V.
And in active mode, the passive tone control offers a different sound and approach to tone shaping than cutting the active treble control does.
So that mod gave me a lot of options - and made the electronics about as flexible as they can be - so yes, I'm happy and satisfied with the results for my tonal goals.

Intersting...All my Bart loaded pre Lulls use switchable 3-band midrange which really is useful..
Add a touch a lower mid - instant thicker sound (if needed) use sparingly
Cut a touch of mid-mid - for a Marcus Miller-ish tone (add a touch of bass&treble boost)
Add a touch of mid-mid - for busy stage mixes to cut
Add a upper mid - for effects works great with deep filters
Don't underestimate the use of midrange...

I appreciate the advice, I'll definitely try some of those suggestions. Thanks TonyP! Like I mentioned earlier, i think I got used to using the passive tone and just pup blend to get the midrange sound I was after on my Sadowsky. I could never dial in the sound I was looking for with the active preamp on that bass so I always played in passive mode. The Bart preamp on the Lull is way better and I think I just need to experiment with it a bit more in live settings. I still think I want to have that passive tone control option added to the bass.....

So true...A well voiced midrange- not all mid eq's are created equal
