In a slightly bizarre twist I ended up buying this bass right here in the TB classifieds a little over a week ago from a guy in Los Angeles. I didn't realize it was the same bass I had previously checked out up here in Washington state a few months back. It wasn't until I started comparing pics from both for sale adds that I realized it was the same bass. I got a little worried that it may still have the same issues as it did when I previously looked at it but I'm happy to report that it arrived in perfect working order. Beautiful bass with impeccable craftsmanship. Super light and comfortable. Love the neck finish and profile. As per TB rules, a pic or it didn't happen.

I was lucky enough to play one of the first ML basses with this pickup. It was amazing. I was in the shop for service for my M5, but the PJ4 I tried was a beautiful instrument and soooo tempting. Passive, w/ ebony board and a Nordstrand MM-type in the bridge position. The P pickup was of course on a new instrument, unfamiliar to me, so difficult to compare with the Frailin, though I do have one of the ML spec'd Fralins on a fretless P. Hard to go wrong either way.

I agree, you can't go wrong with either pickup!
I've got a couple of Lulls with the handwound Lull P pickup and it sounds terrific. I love how the stock Fralin P sounds, but these are a little different and I love the tone. A good friend doesn't like the Fralins but the loves his Lull with the handwound P pickup.

How would you describe the Lull hand-wound pickup compared to the Fralin? Is it darker, smoother, more aggressive, etc.?

The Fralins sounds really good and are the typical P tone in my head - full with great mids and solid low end, pleasant highs but not too much.

The hand wound Lull P has a bit more output, the highs are rolled off a little but it doesn't sound dark to me. The mids are more rich, less of a scoop than the Fralins even though their mids are great. I consider the Fralins to have fantastic tone, the Lull P is a little richer and ruder sounding.
