Hi all,
I have some questions about Mike's PJ4 basses.
What position is the J in? 60's or 70's, or somewhere else entirely?
Are the pickups Mike uses generally balanced, in that both pickups are usable solo as well as combined?
My apologies if these questions have been asked before.

The J sits in the 60's position but you can ask for it in 70's if you want. The J pup is wound to be loud to keep up with the P. Very balanced between the 2.
I'm starting to think my Lull basses are getting even better with age. My V4 is almost 3 years old, and my P4 is 1 1/2 years old, and they just feel better and better as time passes. I would just assume have my Lull basses over any of the $10,000 vintage 60's Fender's.
Ash/rosewood is as good a combination as any.

I'm anxiously anxious to try my alder/maple combo. I've only played maple with ash. I'm hoping it will be the best of both worlds. I find alder/rosewood to be a little too dark, warm and round with not enough growl when I want it. Maple and Ash (depending on the bass of course) can be too bright and harsh.

Share your tonal thoughts afterwards...
Well the only bass I can compare it to that I've had recently to where the tone is still in my head is the G&L LB-100 I just sold which was ash/rosewood. As long as my P4 has more low mids than that bass does I'll be happy. I was told by Bass San Diego that the alder/maple P4 with Fralins has some good midrange growl to it so I might be headed in the right direction.
Does anyone know, Mike has his Fralins custom wound for him, but are they closer to the 5% overwind or the regular Fralins or something else entirely?
I love my ash maple lull jazz! It's such a great combo! It just sizzles! My pj was ash/rosewood with nordys. My p being built now is alder rosewood for warmth. All mine are passive. Except the TC4. I prefer passive tone with my SVT2 tube amp.
I think they are stock Fralins, at least that's what they sound like to me.
By the way, if anyone is considering modding a P with a different pickup, I just modded another brand with the new EMG Geezer pickup ===> OMG really really good.
I know they aren't even close to 10% overwound ones I had in a jazz bass. They were super boomy and the ones in my lull are very even. If anything they lack a touch of lows.... But it's pretty even.
That's what I read too. I just didn't know how those specs differ from the stock offerings.
