To Be honest Dave, I do not...The only reason I know that its different is because Mike told me so. Since I have had no real interest in the T bird basses I never investigated. The only thing I know is the the P position is pulled back more then J position.

You might like that...They one I have coming late spring will have that spot and I like that tone when I soloed it in that positioning. Did you own one of Mike's?

What I meant was between a normal Jazz bass...not a t bird with J spacing.

No, I owned a Gibson. It's crossed my mind to get one of Mikes but the ergonomics just don't work that well for me in general. I'm much more comfortable on a traditionally shaped body.

I agree with this.

The standard bag, for a bass of this quality and price, is a marketing fail for the company. It doesn't detract from the instrument but doesn't quite hit the target at this price point.

Ok if I'm taking your right, the P spacing had less of a 2 pickup mid-scoop going on that you would hear in a J bass persay. Its the most aggressive and stock spacing.

At NAMM there was a alder/rosewood with P spacing and that crazy sunburst JT4-24 with the standard J bass spacing that was ash/maple.

The Alder/Rosewood was significantly more aggressive had had a better slap tone as well then the standard J spacing ash/maple JT4-24 with the same T-bird pickups.

My Lull P/J 24 arrived on Monday. Overall, it's a very nice bass. Weighs in at 7.6 lbs.
What's not good . . . the neck pocket. There's enough space to slide a business card in there with ease. The other thing is the tone knob doesn't really work. I had requested a 1.0uf tone cap but it's not there. So, when I turn the tone knob, no discernible change in tone happens. I guess I'll have to have someone local work on it (perhaps either replace the tone knob and/or the tone cap). I think this could have easily been discovered before shipping but . . .

I wouldn't do that. My experience has been the Mike and the crew are very responsive to any issues. I had my headstock repainted because it was slightly off IMO and they took care of it. Great Customer Service.

I know, I know. I debated the same with mine. Long wait time and then I wasn't completely satisfied, but I sent it back a few days later. Now a couple of years later...completely satisfied, but I wouldn't have been if I didn't send it back.

Freddels...I've had three Lull custom orders...two perfect the first time and one where Paul and I had an honest communication mixup on one spec. I totally get how your feellng, as my bass that had the error...I waited for delivery the longest. When I first received it, I had that internal debate with myself: live with it, or have it fixed locally? I opted to call Mike, and he begged me to send it back to make it right. He expedited the repair (btw---perfect) and I had it back in my play'in hands in no time! Sooooo glad I did, looking back...

FYI as follow up, after posting that my purchase experience from Chicago Bass Exchange wasn't great, the Bass manager, who saw my post, contacted me. He was sincerely interested in the details and wanted to optimize things for me, responded well to the feedback and really impressed me with his follow through. He also said that he shared my disappointment with the standard Lull bag and that going forward, the shop will be providing better bags. I am very impressed. I told him that my initial experience wasn't "bad", but merely wasn't among the best I'd had, and he didn't "settle".....plus he's a bourbon drinker, so it's all good!

As far as the bass goes, the honeymoon continues. I sold one of my Laklands to make room for it (one in, one out is the self-imposed house rule) and in comparing it to my other Lakies, they are very complementary. I find the electronics in the Lull fairly similar to Sadowsky and more mid-forward (when set flat) than the Lakland's. Frankly I am lusting over a JT5-24, since I know and love the sound of the T pups.

My new custom M5V is ready, and just in time for my birthday!

  • Mary Kay finish with pearloid pickguard
  • Nordstrand hum-cancelling pickups
  • Audere preamp with passive tone control
  • 34" scale
  • 7.6 lbs

It sounds SO good! I love the Z Mode with these pickups! The B-string is currently strung through-body and it's plenty taut! Great balanced sound from string-to-string!

So, what do y'all think?
