So you're the lucky guy that got that bass. Mike was testing it when I was picking up one of my basses. Love the down-sized body and it sounded massive through the SWR redhead combo that Mike has.

Sold off a bunch of stuff to get a used M5V, and finally made it happen!
I wanted a natural finish, but went back and forth and back and forth between alder / rosewood versus ash / maple. In the end, I decided that I wanted juicy (a/r) more than dry (a/m). So I pulled the trigger on this sleeper, Plain Jane tone machine in two-tone sunburst. Very light, and the 35" scale is far more manageable with these body / cutaway proportions. Neck also very playable for 1 & 7/8" nut. Sounds great in the basement, and I'm quite pleased so far. Won't have a chance to play it with the band until next week, but that's some good get-acquainted time. Only thing I want to change is the pickguard, as the tortoiseshell is a bit underwhelming. I'm thinking three-ply black.

Interesting...I always hear (a/m) more alive then the (a/r) with a faster snappier, extended higher end response.
I'm guessing your hearing the blossom of lower-mids.
Stoked for you none the less...The finish is killer.
Yes, the low mids are part of it. Also, my experience has been (a/m Skyline JO) that while a/m does typically have more treble response, with a/r, if I attack a note correctly, I can make it jump out against the "darker" tone of the alder. Hence "juicy." Or so the limits of using language to describe tone would have it.
And of course, this is really all just an argument for getting an ash/maple M5V down the road.

That made me smile in my coffee...Its hard at times to describe what we are actually hearing.
All this Lull talk lately is making me really want me crave my JT5-24 on order.
Can anyone tell me if a John East J-Retro preamp would directly fit a Lull V5? I wasn't sure if the routing on the bass is big enough, and if the three screw holes on the control plate would line up.
not exactly, this is just a hunch that it would all fit but the route might not be deep enough, as in the battery might be problematic.
I base this on the fact that I was able to get an OBP-3 in the one I had Mike mod for me, but we had to locate battery outside the control route.
So, I'll be flying to Hong Kong, and I want to take my Lull. Had thought about using a Mono Vertigo and carrying it on. But having read about the obsessively rule-following personnel at HKI check-in, it's just as likely to not be allowed into the cabin. So, does anybody travel to Asia with their Lull, and if you've checked it, what have you used?
If you have to check a bass on an international flight, especially one as pricey as a Lull, a flight case should be the only option. Or buying a 2nd seat on the plane.
