Sweet, I have a PJ5 on the way with Duncan and Aggie with the J in the 70's position. That wait is killing me.

I have this here candy apple blue M4V with matching headstock (#764), Lindy Fralin Hum-Canceling pups, Bartolini 2 band & Hipshot D-tuner.
It plays great & sounds fantastic! I was selling this a little bit ago, but have since come to my senses.
Mike & his team are great people and excellent at what they do. It's great to have them just down the road!

This is not a Lull-built bass, but Mike did a lot of work to it. He removed the original Chrome Red finish and refinished the body in Oly White, removed the original black paint on the headstock and refinished it, installed Aero pickups, installed the Hipshot bridge and new tuners, replaced the original TBX tone control with a standard 250k, and installed a push-pull neck pickup 'on' switch on the master volume. Considering it's humble origins, this bass really sings now, especially for recording. He also did an outstanding job defretting my old 62Jazz. Mike and his crew are the best!

The Lull's neck is much more comfortable to play.
The Fender had a really round neck, C or D shaped, not sure which, depends on who you ask I found.
The Lull has a plethora of tonal options the Fender didn't have mostly due to the Bart & Fralins.
The smaller body is a definite plus, the Fender felt a little large.
And the finish for sure, granted the Fender had been around a bit, but it didn't have the deep rich eye catching blue like the Lull.

Fenders are definitely a C... they are probably just a deeper C than the Lull. A D neck is VERY distinct... they have a "flat" area on the back, like Warrior, Jerzy Drozd, etc.

The smaller body is a definite plus, the Fender felt a little large.

The American Deluxe's have smaller bodies than the standard Fenders, so this point is dependent on the model.

I've only spent limited time on a Lull, but that'll be remedied at some point coming up ;) however, I can guess a pretty major point you left out that's probably about as significant as anything... at least for 5's.

Lulls are 35" scale, and Fenders are 34". This changes a LOT of stuff.

Another thing to consider is, I'd bet Mike spends more time with wood selection than Fender does... at least outside the Custom Shop anyway.

Thanks man, just in anticipation of mine. Vic, or anyone for that matter, how thick of a neck am I lookin at for a Lull P?

Well, I just paid off my new J style bass (tho not a Lull), which will also have 70's spacing, so we have a VERY interesting test day coming up at some point, as well. :)

O.K. I'm in. I have #1054 I bought it used out of Mike's shop over in Bellevue which is about a 15min drive from where I live. I have been having Mike do work on other basses I own. The last time i took a bass over there I made the mistake of playing every bass in his show room. I fell in lust with the one I have. I did not get it that day I had to think about it for a week. When I picked up my bass the next week I left with two. The one I brought in for work and the Lull that I now have. Cool Bass 24 fret 5er quilt top in what I think he calls it carmel burst barts and three way pre with mid selector switch. And the best part... its under 8lbs.
