There are some nice-looking basses here! I just got M5V back from my instructor and now I should get a pic of my two.

As an aside, my instructor showed my Lull to several of her other students and after looking at some prices on used ones, they were convinced that it was better bass value than a Fender.

And I yours, Nino (that's some massive quilt you've got going one)... but at this point I needed a nice four-string or a fretless more than a fiver.

Instant Lull Karma... (which is actually true - purchasing the red keeps both my 4 & 5-string Lull tops nicely flamed and not quilted :smug: )

Thanks for the thanks, Arthur. You've always has a kind word to say and help to give when needed. :D I can also vouch for Blueberry Jay - I've spoken to him many a time, and while I've had the luck of getting my Lulls at "discount prices" on the used market, when the day comes where I map out the full "Custom Ian" it'll be through Jay that I do so. :)

I'll be heading up to Seattle to visit Mike's shop and check out some basses soon. There are none to play here in town. I am really interested in a 5 string jazz. I'm saving the money and scanning the TB classifieds. Natural finish body with rosewood fretboard, please.
Questions for the Lull Club:
Can anyone give me some input on neck size and thickness in their 5 string jazz? I like a nice wide and thick neck i.e. Pbass vs a thinner Jbass. My fender 5 string jazz feels good although I am not happy with the low b. Just not that natural sounding. I'm hoping for improvement in a Lull.
2nd question, hows the low B? And why doesnt he run all the strings thru the body vs just the b?
Another question for the Lull Club, why all the maple necks? I really prefer a rosewood or other darker wood fretboard in appearence and fretboard feel.
I'm grateful for any input and it's nice to see an idependent luthier getting his business off the ground. They look fantastic. It's time for me to move up from mass produced instruments. Many Thanks, Dan

I just need some opinions as a final push to pull the trigger on one of these... I am looking at an M5V, black w/ black pg, maple board, Bart NTMB pre, Duncan single coils...

Basically I am looking for a do-it-all J5...

According to the retailer there is a passive mode with the Bart pre but no passive tone control, he himself said that Barts are sorta notorious for having a great active sound but not so good passive, but the Duncan pickups should take care of that right? Anyone have this p/u and pre combo on theirs? Sound clips?

The other top of the list question is the low B... I was considering Sadowsky and Nordy but the 35" scale of Lull's seem promising... Since the B is the reason for getting a 5, this needs to be an awesome B string, one that you don't have to ease up on the attack to keep it sounding solid and big.

What's the string spacing on the Hipshot bridge? Hopefully it's the wide .750 (Fender style).

Thanks for any/all opinions and advice, I live pretty centralized to 2 GC's, a Sam Ash but not too many boutique bass shops around... So I haven't played a Lull, Nordy or Sadowsky. But I'm willing to buy blind with the right advice and research.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I have the SD single coils with Bart 3 band pre. The SD passive mode needs no tone control other than the pup blend. This has the more profound effect on passive tone IMO. The mid control is also selectable (250? 800?). Unlike other combinations, the passive and active settings share the same overall tonal character without significant volume bumps when switching modes. The string spacing feels like 18 mm but with more of a jazzish taper then, let's say, a Sadowsky. The B string is solid and well-defined.

If it makes you feel any better, I bought mine sight unseen as well.

I have that setup in my M5, and I really dig it. I have the same pickups but with the aguilar OB-3 in my M5V. Both sound great, and I think the Bart preamp is really great for the jazz bass sound. (I can't compare them however, because both basses sound very different with or without the pre) While I do like having a passive tone control I really have not missed it in this bass. The active mode is not to colored and the passive mode sill sounds great even without the tone control flexibility.

As far as the B string goes it will have everything you are looking for. I am happy to play the B string at any note on the neck and feel that it sounds even with the others strings. But I have also played a few Nordy's and a few Sadowsky's with great B's in 34 and 34.5 length.

Don't hesitate to call Mike and ask him about tonal differences between different options on his basses, his seems always happy to help.

I'll have some soundclips soon. I will be getting my PJ5 black and maple this week. Have the Duncan p'ups, but got the Aggie pre-amp. Frankly, with your combo, I think you will be alright without the passive tone control. However, if you really wanted that, I would encourage the aggie(sounds better to my ears atleast)
If Barts your sound though, go with that. Either way, you are going to get one heck of a versitile bass.:)

By the way, Lull's B string is one of the best around.

Now the debate is if I am to go for the one I've seen online; which Zooberwerx (Riis) feels might be a bit overpriced; or to order a new custom one from Jay @ Blueberry Hill for hopefully a better deal - but if I do that I might get one with PJ pickups and talk to Mike about the Aggie pre, or hold out for a nice used one. At the end of the day it's a good problem to have.

So thanks guys, I can't wait to join this club.
