i use the head with 2 diffrent cabs (obvo not at the same time)

if i run it with my ashdown 1x15 it gives plenty of low end and its a great little reggae thing at low volumes. start pushing the tubes and it sounds like noting else

the other cab is a 2x8 pa cab with a tweeter that gives the head alot of midrange and is perfect sort of half way volume. almost sounds like one of the old fender musicmaster bass amps

While I do like the Valve Jr. straight up for bass at pretty low volumes, my most common use has been for driving a "rhythm guitar" channel (fed by my Akai Uni-Bass). Lately, though, it has been usurped by my Reverend Hellhound combo...

p.s out of cureosity how meny cabs do you actually have

LOL! Good eye! That was driving an extra rhythm guitar rig for an open mic/stage night gig. That Phil Jones Neo-Power 8B actually sounds extremely good on guitar (and bass, of course!). :cool:

IME, it can drive about any cab just fine, but not too loudly. I like the EA Wizzy and the Neo-Power 8B for guitar-like tones, but I think it would sound just fine with an Avatar 112. It will get into overdrive pretty quickly, though, as you turn it up.

+1 However, his point is that just talking about watts is kind of like talking about horsepower, but not taking into account if that horsepower is driving a mobile home, a dump truck, or a Porsche.

Fun topic that imparts virtually no information on volume or tone without the other variables mentioned in various posts above.:)

All the tech idiots come flying in to just ruin a fun topic! (not you Ken)

I would say that 99% of the biggest mouths tech wise on these boards don't play more than 6 gigs a year (I'll nail 200 easily this year alone).
But they'll puke out numbers and make it sound like they're playing a gig every 2 hours. And most couldn't play their way out of their own bedrooms (Ken and I know one guy personally, who talks like he's a massively seasoned pro, who to be honest, could play an SX or a Fodera, and in reality he couldn't tell the difference in tone)
I take what they say with pretty much a grain of salt.

For once just have fun with it.
How many watts is your rig??

:D +1 in general (lots of discussion on this at the moment around the thread). There is a fine line between trying to be helpful and explain some of this stuff (I learned a lot from some of the EE's on this site), versus just making you feel like an idiot or that you entire existence sucks:p

One thing for sure, I can tell the difference between an SX and a Fodera. For the most part, I prefer the SX:hiding:

Hell, my entire existence does suck mostly!
But I turn down enough gigs (and play enough gigs) to know that according to a lot of those guys, my crappy pair SWR Goliath I 410's, or my pair of AccuGroove Tri-110's really suck compared to the latest flavor of the month cab.....

+1, although the relationship to watts and cab voicing and driver specs is a very real and very interesting one, since I've now experienced quite a few of these 'super 15's' and 'super 12's', etc.

It is also interesting that many who carry around 1200 watts would hear absolutely no difference in their rigs versus 500 watts. Not a big deal, but maybe discussions like this can either save some guys some money and weight, or on the other hand, suggest when a lot of watts really is beneficial, regardless of whether you play loud or not.

On the other hand, if it sounds good, it sounds good... so in some sense... who cares!

To be honest, the difference between IMO, 600 watts and say 1000 watts is just how clean/headroom.

There isn't much more bliss than having a couple thousand watts in a rack driving an 810 or two though!!!!

But this is about the total. Just for fun.

I'm still waiting for Genz to release something like my 9.0, but with 1500 or more watts in a tiny package!

It's like the guy with the blown 65 Camero who gets dusted off by the kid with the WRX STI turbo.
Sure the STI is an engineering marvel and fast as freakin hell, but nothing accounts for just shear raw horse power!

I love my Yamaha FZR and my HondaST1300, but not much else is really cooler (IMO) than my tricked Harley V-Rod!!!!

Depends on the cab(s);)

However, +1... hard to not feel cool about 1200 watts, regardless of all this other stuff.

I'm still waiting for Genz to come out with a 1200 watt amp that actually puts out 1200 watts:p That, of course, would be an entirely different discussion:hiding: That's another point, many who feel like they have massive watts actually probably don't when you look at the frequency distribution of that power delivery, the THD, etc., etc. The Walter Woods Ultra is a classic example of that IMO and IME.

Right now, I am running a Pope pre into a QSC power amp into one Epifani UL310. The amp is 900 watts per side @ 4 ohms, but the cab is rated at 5.3 ohms --- I think. I am going to be adding another UL310. This combo should cover 100% of my gigs, and the whole rig weighs, maybe, 90 lbs or so. For rehearsals and smaller gigs, I'm under 50 lbs!!

To put it into contrast----10 years ago, my amp was a 350 watt SS SVT into a 2x10 and 1x15. That weighed over 150 lbs.

For me, I I'd rather buy something that I know is overkill, than something that I hope will be loud enough. The price gap between two of the same power amps, one with 2x the power, is getting alot smaller.
