I absolutely LOVE that bass part. It never gets old for me.

The band I'm in plays mostly country so I'm doing a 1-5, 1-5 a lot. When I get to play a "real" bass part I relish every note.

Good God, you're both right. I've always played straight through because it sounded empty when I didn't (a while ago). I'll have to try the chorus-only method if we gig it again.

I generally like the Stones, but not this one. The guitarist's cowbell pedal has a lot to do with that..just goes right through my head.

i do "honky tonk woman" in one of my bands on guitar, and i'd be pissed if the bass player came in and crapped all over the verses! (my guy is top-notch, so of course he doesn't.)

that's what the song is supposed to sound like; anybody who says "it doesn't sound full" is clueless and needs to actually go listen to it for once. that sparse verse is a big part of the hook, it highlights the funky drum part and makes the chorus that much stronger when the bass does come in.

(i guess that's my cover band complaint, players doing tunes who sound like they've only ever heard other cover bands doing them and have no feel for the original itself.)

Not a great list but in the context of overplayed cover songs, the band would have to be a standard top40 pop/rock cover band. Not a band that plays a lot of obscure tunes or album cuts. I play mostly r&b but I've played several songs on this list. Mustang Sally would probably the song I've played the most and I've been at this since 1973.

I used to think Roadhouse Blues, but like anything else, it depends on how you play it. My last band took it into an extended jam, with flute solo, drums/bass break - lots more fun to play, and the audience loved it.
