The strange thing is we are very, very successful and popular in out market.
Part of it is that we are pretty good players
Part of it is the band has a long history and legacy
Part of it is that people actually love this stuff.

I don't know what my point is , but the succuss, stability ( I've been working with these guys for over 16 years ) ( the band was formed in 1984), and familiarity has kept me from bailing many times.
I do want to hang myself sometimes though

"Mustang Sally" makes my Top Five most overplayed covers list, along with "Sweet Home" and "You Shook Me."

Oddly, I sing two of those in my Top 40/Variety band, and they all remain among the most popular dance floor favorites with our audiences.

I have to agree with this in general.
I tend to avoid live bands at bars, fairs, and car shows because they all have the same tired playlist for octogenarian Boomers that think music stopped in 1979. They might throw the occasionally gag-worthy 90s Aerosmith cover in there, but that just makes me hate them more.

Music died in 1992.

For solo acts: Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah. I've heard a lot of people try to match it and fail.

Lately we started a new dance setlist beginning with ''Michael Jackson's Billy jean'' done instrumental; We voted on it (unanimously). Overplayed? maybe. Done instrumental (our version)-no.

In 8+ years of various cover bands, I don't think there has been a show in which I haven't played My Own Worst Enemy.

Easy to play poorly.

Yep. To play Sweet Home Alabama correctly is to acknowledge the breaks, accents and mini-riffs that are (beginner) guitar (and bass) friendly but so badly ignored by even experienced musicians.

The song is even more laborious to cover when the drummer thinks he knows where the chorus accents are and you're left guessing and then, even cycling through the changes becomes a bore because of the missed cues that running through it 2-3 times in rehearsal would cure FOREVER!

I realized last night the Willin' shares part of the progression with Wagon Wheel, so I see a more satisfying-for the band- version ahead.

Most of these songs aren't overplayed, they are just played poorly. Too many people half-assing their way through an embarrassing version of a song that would make the tone-deaf cringe.

You can't polish a turd. If the source material is tired, you can't really fix it with a cover.

I'll give you guys credit for playing some tunes written this century. As a Gen-Xer I couldn't be more tired of Sublime though. I thought they were overrated 20 years ago.

There are unimaginative covers that may not play well. Tired, as some would put it here. But, they are crowd favorites for a reason. What is really interesting is when a band has an unique take on an old favorite. I keep a play list of interesting remakes that I listen to regularly; it contains over 70 songs, including such tired old songs as Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Sharp Dressed Man, Freebird, and a couple of versions of Smoke on the Water.
