Amen on the too fast. My band does this tune and it is always too fast no matter what I say. They think it is cool to play it fast.

I guess this is the $10K question: Do you like the original? If you bake a great cake with only a little nugget of poop in the middle, then you still have poop in your cake.

If you're a cover band at least 3/4 of your set list has to be beat-to-death songs or the bar won't hire you.

Any song can work if played well. One band I play in has a sax player. Someone suggested MS, and a man in the audience said he played his trumpet, and wanted to sit it. With a horn section (and a good groove), the song can really work.
Well, I've never had to play Mustang Sally and I don't want to, However If I had a singer that could sing it like that cat in the movie The Commitments I might just do it!

Not really. We don't play any of that stuff or most any other worn out stuff and I am pretty darn sure that's one of the things that people like about us!
Same here. We stick to the groove and tempo of the original and have a horn section. It sounds great and packs dance floors.
Depends on the setting really, when i had a five piece band there was nothing we wouldn't try and often did a great job of it...five good players makes it easy, but now that I;m what basically amounts to a power trio there's a whole bunch of stuff I don't even want to try, somethings just wont work if you strip it down to a three piece...that's how you end up with those "embarrassingly mediocre" covers someone else mentioned in this thread. If the band has 4 or more pieces, especially with something like Lynryd Skynrd who has 2 drummers 3 guitars and a keyboard...as a power trio...I don't even want to go near it!

It's amazing how s l o w some songs really are. I did Brick House and Play that Funky Music on a sub gig, and you don't realize how the groove is really several clicks slower than you figured it could be.
I think I heard part of Mustang Sally once on Youtube out of curiousity, otherwise I dont think I've ever heard it anywhere... ever.
To quote one of my favorite Nashville session guys, Kenny Greenberg: "I'm not an artist. I'm in the service business." Whatever it is, if it's on the setlist, I'm gonna play it, and play it correctly. Depending on the BL's definition of "correctly" of course.
