This is the way to buy gear. I'd rather buy an instrument that was taken care of by someone who knows what they're doing than one that was hanging on a wall at guitar center getting mangled by a bunch of dirty hands, or even fresh out of a box.
I have a different nominee: the little Gretsch Electromatic Jr Jet 2202.
It's short scale, black/grey with a white pearloid pickguard and a single pickup, just tone and volume controls...sells for under $300 brand new. It's a steal at that price!!
That single pickup has one of the BIGGEST sounds I've ever heard! It roars, it thumps, it sounds wonderful. And the bass is light, looks good the fit and finish are excellent. It's a complete sleeper but sounds 3x bigger than it is.

I really dig that, where did you find it?
Out of basses I've had experience playing, it's my SR500. £270 new and I love it more than I love my Stingray, which depresses me slightly!
My son's is awesome after we got it set-up right.
But I have to agree with the votes for Peaveys, too.
The trouble with Peavey is the same trouble Datsuns had. They were cheap and plentiful, and kept goin and goin long after they were ugly rust-buckets. So then closed-minded people like me come to think of the brand that way.
I have to admit, it's an impressive company to do the work they have for so long. Slightly cheaper copies of what other companies make, or quality mixed with value. It's the kind of thing that really appeals
, but hard to keep the brand image up.I think the Epiphone Jack Casady Signature qualifies. It's tone is simply astounding!

That ain't gonna happen, its here for the long haul. If it's not underrated why were they not more popular, and why were they ultimately discontinued?
I don't think Ibanez fit in the "under-rated" category because they seem to be like the most popular instruments out there, possibly even more than Fenders.
I guess I haven't seen any sales data, but that's my perception. Ibbys are awesome, but everyone already knows it.

Well, if someone already said it, here is another:
90s Peavey Fury (Jazz neck + hottest stock P pickup).
For under $1000, the world's pretty much your oyster. My personal recommendation is either a Gibson Grabber (yes, they can still be found for cheap) or any of the older USA G&L models. AMAZING instruments.
I think that's because they're not in the stores. I've yet to find ANY G&L in a store, Tributes or MIA. I would love to find one to play, but nobody has them.
No kidding, I finally got to play a G&L yesterday. A used L-1000 at a GC. Played great, only $600.
Usually specialists' stores. Here we have The Bass Store but they moved from Tempe/Scottsdale city limit to way far out.
It's true that it depends on the store too.
GC in Tempe sells MTD Kingston but no Music Man. GC in Scottsdale, the other way around.
Go figure...
Under a grand, an early 90's MIJ J or P is an easy choice for me. If price weren't considered I would have to say that the Barker Brio Vertical bass is really, really fun to play and it sounds freakin' huge!
