Carvin SB4000/SB5000 seem to be be getting a lot of attention. I heard one last Friday - in hands of master player (Carvin and Fender endorsor) so anything would have sounded good, but I thought the SB4000 sounded really really good...
2009 Fender MiM P... those with the maple fretboard.

Ibanez ATK, my 305 immediately cured my GAS for a Musicman. Lots of tonal variety for a single pickup bass and plays like butter. 
I'm also a big fan of Yamaha BB series basses. Great stuff with a smallish price tag.

haha... I have a Peavey Foundation and a 2008 Fender MIM P... used to have ATK. I am the underrated bass King!
IMHO, it's gotta be my black Peavey Fury, maple fretboard, early 90s model. It's a "slap demon" and honestly puts my Fender Jazz MIM and other pricier basses to shame. I'll never sell my Peavey. Rock on Meridian, Mississippi!!!!!!!!!!!
ALot of people are snobs towards musicman subs , they sound identical to "real" rays and better then the sterling by musicman line and i got one under 400$ with a hardcase,
I don't know if they qualify as "underrated", since we all seem to know about them, but Peavey Cirrus basses (and some of the other Peaveys) offer some of the most bang-for-the-buck on the market, IMHO. Lakland skylines should get a mention here too.

Over 25 years old and you can get them for under $150.00 with original hardshell case.
They had an Alnico Pickup and a maple neck that felt like a Fender P!
It was my first bass, over 20 years ago, and it rocked! But then again, I may be emotionally attached to it... ;-)

You can a USA-made Peavey Cirrus for the same price that most companies charge for their import line, or even less in some cases. I have seen many reports of folks getting them for $800-$1000 brand new. For that price, they are an INSANE value and they simply destroy everything I've ever played in that price range.
