naa na i'm a firm beliver that playing is more imp than gear overall. but l also think that simple bass lines which sound great need not depend on chops and technique alone.. just saying (even i'll never say i'm good.. i really am not , but i love the instrument and im willing to learn and that makes me happy)...If only choice of gear was a direct correlation with ability!!!! Just spend some time on The Gear Page if you need convincing that it's not!!

I would definitely agree that being an effective bassist is more about knowing how to respect and fill spaces, timing, subtlety, creativity and respect for the groove than having a million killer chops or skills. With that said, I like to be modest as it drives me to practice everyday and seek out new groups of people to play with. This winter I was gigging 4 days a week with an acoustic guitarist and a percussionist and it was a total blast (even if the song choice sometimes left something to be desired). Now I am trying to do that a little less (1-2x per week) and forming a soul/r&b band (Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Labi Siffre, etc and a bunch of this new singer's originals). So I am studying James Jamerson, Duck Dunn and Michael Henderson's playing with Stevie in the super early 70s like "Live at the Talk of the Town" - which incidentally has some of the best bass playing in this style that I have ever heard. Highly recommended. AND some killer MuTron playing by Stevie (to bring it back to this thread).
cool.. thats great, i'm familiar with some of that music but not that album..
amazing music and i think its where the "pocket bass" originated from (amongst other places) in a way.. dunn and james jamerson are amongst my absolute favs.

Sadly, I sold them all to finance some other gear that I needed and the Mutron stuff had gotten valuable.

Dude you need to see if you can find this "Live at the Talk of the Town". I had it on vinyl and then recently iTunes released it as part of the complete Stevie Wonder. I always appreciated Michael Henderson for his work with Stevie and Miles but daaaaaaamn....
Well dude you will be happy to hear that Mike Begiel has big plans for his new line of effects pedals and a new BiPhase is among them! I can't wait. I have never owned one but had pretty regular access to one and it blew my freaking mind the things you could do with it.

If you're looking for a ton of versatility, there are certainly other options. And there are a few Mu-tron imitators that may be good enough for you. But for THAT sound, only the Mu-Tron III truly satisfies. If you haven't tried an original Musitronics Mu-Tron III in top working condition, you owe it to yourself to do so at some point.

I just acquired a Mutron III here on TB - the one with the external power supply.
A producer I was working with brought one to a session and I recorded through it and from that moment I realized that the originals do something that I've never heard from any other filter.
I had the Haz - a really, really good filter. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for the price.
I have a 3Leaf Proton (one of the prototypes) and a SA Manta - also both really, really great filters, and very versatile.
And now I have The Grail. Rrraow!

I have never heard the HAZ labs version since Mike is a friend and I know the bad blood between them. I have always been curious as to how they compared. I would find it surprising if HAZ labs bought the rights/acquired the rights/whatever and then completely changed the circuit but kept the case. On the other hand, Mike once told me the price of the materials alone for a MuTron and it wouldn't surprise me if HAZ cut some corners.

Here's mine... I’ve owned this pedal since Oct 1975 , and it went through these modifications shortly afterwards. It’s been in a box in my old gear stuff since the early 80s when I lost the power supply... which is probably somewhere here still in another box... There is no battery compartment, as its filled with pots and switches - and a stand-mount base.
I really liked the stand mount and mini toggles, as I was in a show band and didn’t have the freedom to bend down and adjust the sound and had to do it on –the-fly. I’d still like that feature.
My Mutron III was wired by a local tech in 'stereo' in 1976. By that, I mean that I had a Fender Jazz Bass that was wired like a stereo Rickenbacker bass. The Bridge pickup and Neck on a TRS Jack/Plug setup. I had the Mutron rewired to accept the TRS signal. This gave a pass-through for the Neck pickup to maintain the bottom end, and the Bridge pup was Mutron’ed. I had a balance control and TRS output. That went to 2 separate amp/speaker (8x10 & 18"folded horn) combinations. It sounded freaking awesome!
It's been gigged hundreds of times, and when I went back to a normally wired bass in the early 80s I stopped using it. I'd like to get it running again

Do you rate a number?!? I'd say so brother! That has to be the coolest modded Mutron I have ever seen.
Definitely worth getting it up and running. Especially since you could sell it for a small fortune if u really hate it! Which I doubt. Look on page one of this thread and there is a link to Richard lingenberg's site. He sells power supplies and cables etc for MuTrons. He can get you sorted for sure.
