I'm not happy about what Backstrom did... Peverley gave him a little trip, but that doesn't excuse a cross-check. Hopefully Shanahan doesn't suspend him for it; that would be a huge loss for the Caps.

And the Caps are starting to unravel? Because they're down a game in the series? What a homer you are. I don't know who's going to win it, but I know that the Caps are playing virtually even hockey with the Bruins.

We have different views on Looch - no big surprise there. I see him as a big guy who tends to catch as much grief as he gets because the refs figure he can take care of himself.

The unravelling was not in that they lost a game and are down 2-1. B's fans have been on both sides of comebacks in the last two Stanley Cup tournaments, this series is far from over and the Caps can certainly come back. My observation was in the way they lost the last game - it wasn't nearly as bad as the Pens but it was headed in that direction (if the Caps continue down the Pittsburgh road, I would be happy). Hard disciplined hockey brought the Caps to where they were even with the B's - but then they started to get a little undisciplined and chippy and they twice lost a lead last night. My observation remains the same - when a team is more focused on slashing the other team in the groin, instigating and playing up to the home crowd with silly gestures and taking runs at players when time expires - that is a team that is not focused on the things that are needed to win the cup.

I haven't watched the Caps enough to know if they can refocus or how they respond to adversity in general. But seriously, are Caps fans calling for more of the Game 3 hijinks in Game 4?

Now that the Pens have severely choked I think it's safe for me to return to this thread ;) Regarding the Pens Flyers...

I think what happened is being blown out of proportion.

I don't think what Asham did was that bad. Obviously all the Penguins are extremely frustrated. He reacted to an illegal hit by Schenn. What he did was really stupid and deserves a suspension, but it was a reaction and nothing else. Things happen.

I thought Crosby seemed like he was just trying to find a way to swing momentum. I thought what he did to Voracek's glove was funny. However I think he has solidified his reputation as a punk, and it is really going to take some hard work on his part to fix his reputation. At the same time, I'm not sure people will give him the chance, regardless of what he does in the next 15 years.

What Adams did was nothing new. Deserves a suspension like he got under the current NHL rules.

Neal's actions were the worst though. I think he just lost it. He deserves suspended and should issue an apology to Couturier if he already hasn't.

Hats off to the Flyers and their staff. For as much as I said about Lavy for his comments and actions, I have to now eat my shoe and commend him for his demeanor throughout the playoffs. His coaching has won the Flyers the series.


I don't get the hate for Lucic. I hate the Bruins with a passion, but I would give anything to have Looch on the Penguins. He is tough as nails and a good player.

Rumor going around that Staal wants out of Pburgh. I wouldn't blame him for going somewhere else, as he could play on the first line on a lot of teams and who could fault him for that. But I hope he has nothing to do with these rumors, because talking about it before the playoffs are even over is totally classless. I don't think he would do something like that, but who knows.

I agree with you, Crosby has damaged his reputation
but yes he will be given the chance to repair it.
And I think he will.

Asham's hit is not being overblown though.
A cross check to the neck is an extremely dangerous hit
and was not part of the play, it was just a retaliation
I thought Schenn's hit was pretty clean but he got a penalty

I'd like to see Staal out of Pittsburg because he is so good.
He should get the chance to be a bigger part of team.
Have to give Staal and Kenedy props for playing hockey while his teammates were losing it

He didn't actually hit him in the neck, and who's to say he was even aiming for his neck? Maybe he was aiming for his chest and missed high. I don't see how it's any worse than what Weber did and he didn't even get suspended. Asham will get his suspension and he deserves it, but he's far from a goon. Sad to see people painting that picture of him.

NBC and many other media outlets report that it was
a crosscheck to the throat
I have only heard a few Pens fans claim that it wasn't

i agree it's no worse than the Weber hit
Weber should have been suspended

I disagree.
Every so often, you get games like this.
Usually, though, it is a series (or two) between bitter rivals (Flyers-Pens; Flyers-Rangers; Flyers-Devils; Flyers-Sabres...) ;-)

I still say most don't watch hockey because-
They didn't play the game in their youth...and they can't relate (& don't want to learn). A draw a similar parallel with Jazz...most can't relate (or don't want to learn).
No doubt, there are some that like the fighting (same people that like NASCAR for the crashes, I guess).

TV & hockey? That's easy. It is a difficult sport for TV timeouts & commercials.
People will then say "...hockey is not popular".
I usually counter with-
It's very popular because it's arenas are filled with asses in the seats.
Any putz can sit at home & watch the NBA or MLB...it takes effort to drive to an arena, pay too much to park, sit in your seat for the next 4-5 hours, fight your way outta the parking area, drive home, etc.

When Schenn came back to the bench,....TSN commentary mentioned that he had stitches under his bottom lip. That's evidence to me that Asham made contact with Schenn's jaw with that crosscheck. As a Flyer,...Asham always struck me as a sticks and elbows down kinda guy.

I don't think the Schenn hit was charging. Been seeing hits like that all series long. The Pens have been running over the Flyers physically and that was the first charging penalty (if memory serves). I think it's a case of the Refs trying to keep some semblance of control.

I know we are in agreement with Asham's actions. The way I see it,...if he felt the Schenn hit was illegal,...he should've let the refs deal with it,...or challenge him to drop the gloves on their next shift.

Seems like in that game frustration turned into intent to injure. If Shannon jumps the shark and does not suspend Neal,...then this series needs to end tomorrow. I wanted this series to go a little longer,...but the more I think about,...the more I want it to end quickly. I don't want the Pens to have anymore opportunities to hurt a Flyer. If they do not suspend Neal,...then he needs to answer the bell on his first shift.

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt on the Coulterier hit,....seemed incidental to me,...but the head hunting run he took at Giroux,...had intent behind it IMO. He got assessed a charging minor for it. And rightfully so if they are gonna assess Schenn one on a clean check.

Schenn was assessed a charging penalty. Look at 0:22 in the video just linked. Both his feet are clearly off the ice. But you are right, it does not justify Asham's actions. Take the penalty or drop the gloves.

I'd like to give Neal the benefit the doubt in terms of intent, but regardless he should apologize. Looks like he was really out there to hurt someone. I don't think he's that kind of player.

Schenn's feet do indeed appear to come up,...but it's hard for me to determine if that is just prior to contact,...or as a result of the contact.

RE Take the Penalty of Drop the Gloves. The latter is Asham's style. He's an enforcer type,...but again,...I think frustration has him and a lot of other pens out of character.

Asham hasn't played in Philly for two or three seasons now, and I don't know what his supplemental discipline record looks like after his tenure as a Flyer...so maybe he has changed over the course of that time.

I honestly do not look at Asham as a goon or thug. He is a 4th line grinder and sometimes enforcer. The only goon the Pens really have is MacIntyre and I think he played something like 8 games this year. Asham had 4 points in 7 games in the playoff series last year and has been a big part of the team. Pens fans seem to forget that.

The only thing I can think of recently was when he knocked out Beagle of the Caps, and then did the lights out go to sleep thing with his hands. He stated he did not realize Beagle was laying on the ice hurt and immediately regretted his actions. The crosscheck was a frustration play for sure.
