The Official 2012 NHL Stanely Cup Finals Thread

I keep playing that game winner from the Flyers/Penguins game in my mind...

That puck went through three Penguins in the crease to get to Voracek on the other side. Fluery and Staal were two of them, don't know who the third was.

By that OT, the Penguins were really gripping their sticks way too hard. That ice tilted back after the first period dramatically!

I don't see how any of the officiating affected the outcome of the Pens/Flyers game one. Sure Briere was offsides, but there was the missed icing call in favor of the Pens. Besides, the Briere goal left the Pens up 3-1 anyway. Heck, I thought the Giroux boarding call was borderline.

Players and coaches win games, I have always believed that. Good and determined teams never put themselves in a spot where an official can have an affect on if they win or lose. From Bylsma on down that team should be embarrassed for their performance in game one. I hope Philly rolls them up 4-1 or 5-1 on Friday.

Here's the Weber hit. The worse part about it is that it is not only intentional, but he clearly does it twice (he missed the first time). Even Fox Sports Nashville is expecting a suspension for that one.

I also heard Babcock unloaded on the officials. The sad thing is that you really can't tell anything about the series from this game because the officials simply didn't let them play hockey.

Again I'm not suggesting this gave Nashville an advantage. Also Helm is out for the playoffs, that's a big loss for Detroit, he's a real energy guy.

As far as the other series, how did the Pens blow a three goal lead? I caught the goal in OT. I think the Pens (personnel wise) are the best team in a league with no clearly superior teams. BUT, until they show that they have real leadership from guys like Crosby ( in fairness Crosby wasn't around this year) and Malkin who are still marginal on defense, I don't know that they will ever be a dominant team. The sad thing is in a league with this hard a Salary cap that is this physical we have had 8 different Stanley Cup winners in 8 years.

Even as good as the Wings are, I suspect they are going to have to look at some major moves in the off season. I would even be open to trading Zetterberg for the right young players.

Haven't you called yourself a Pens fan? Sorry, but a fan never hopes his team will lose to their rivals in the playoffs lol.

Sorry Mike, With the current parity officials have a big effect on games and sometimes a series. While I can't comment on the PA game last night (I only watched portions of it), I've seen more than a couple of series where the calls didn't even out, and didn't even hold close to true to the teams reputations. Not only that it is clear that some players play under a different set of rules, obviously this effects the teams involved.

The Detroit- San Jose series a two years ago was a great example of it. When one team is on the power play 3-4 times what the other team is, and neither team is normally a heavily penalized team something is wrong. The San Jose Divers clearly effected the outcome of that series.

Hockey is not by any means the worse officiated, that's the NBA. But the NHL guys give them a run for their money. Last nights Detroit Nashville game was an exercise in pathetic officiating. In this case I don't believe it effected the outcome, it just destroyed the flow of the game.

How often do you think the officials affected the outcome (or the "flow") of games where the Wings won?

I am a hockey fan first, and a Pens fan second. It used to be the other way around.

Here we go with another "you're not a real fan" discussion. We go through that cycle in the NFL threads a few times every year. Some guy comes along and picks "his" team to lose and a few others jump on the guy for not being a "real fan". So I guess I'm not a Pens fan after all. That's OK I guess.

No argument from me about poor officiating Burk, but the good teams play through it. I'm sure a game here or there has been tilted by a bad call, but when it all washes out, good teams win games, series, and championships.

If your Wings fall to the Predators in this series, it will not be because of some perceived poor officiating. Same with the Pens.

There's a difference between saying you think your team will lose, and actually cheering against them, especially in the playoffs. I wouldn't consider you a Penguins fan at all, period. Everyone (well, most) has a favorite team. If you are cheering against them, they are obviously not your favorite team.

I disagree completely. It happens in all sports too.

Say Team A and Team B are in Game 7. The game is tied with 10 seconds left. A player from Team A gets a breakaway. A player from Team B makes stick on puck contact and player from Team A falls. Official calls tripping and awards a penalty shot. Player from Team A scores on the penalty shot and Team A wins the series. How does that wash out? It doesn't.

That's fine. I'll just be a hockey fan who likes the Penguins. I can handle that.

I won't be cheering for the Flyers to win, but I do think the Pens need a good smackdown to wake them up and hopefully come back to win the series. A few weeks ago I was hoping for a couple smackdowns to wake them up, and I thought the last loss to Philly was it. I guess not.

-Mike

Wow bro....you and me been going toe to toe for a few weeks now in this thread. Funny how we like the same team, but can't seem to get along.

Any team that leaves the balance of a game in the hands of an official has not done enough to win. Your scenario is real, but I don't remember anything like that happening recently in sports.

-Mike

I wasn't aware that we were going at it, and I'm not sure why you're getting so offended.

You said you hoped the Flyers beat the Penguins in Game 2. Hoping your team loses a game in the playoffs is the complete opposite of the definition of fan.

You said all poor officiating washes out, I provided a theoretical example where it doesn't.

I find it interesting that I can get along with the Flyers fans in the thread while blatantly antagonizing them with homer antics, yet you are offended by a simple discussion. I guess I'll bow out of the thread, because this isn't fun. Bye.

Offended? Not me. You called me out as not being a Pens fan, and I accepted your opinion and half acknowledged it being true. I got no problems with you bro. You certainly don't need to leave on my account.

I agreed with your scenario and explained why I thought it shouldn't happen.

Earlier in this thread you were picking the Pens while I said I thought the Flyers would win. Not "going at it" in the true sense I suppose. I just thought it was funny we haven't agreed on much recently when we should be in total agreement as the playoffs start. Oh well, I sure hope the Pens turn it around and take the series. Lot's of hockey left to play.
