Wow, good timing on this thread. I leave for three days, come back wondering about this Fafner head, and what do I find? But an EBS thread of course...

So after crusing through pages of reviews, I want to talk to someone direct about this: What are your takes on the Fafner head in a strictly rock setting? I've heard this proclaimed as 'The Slap Head' which is cool, but not what I'm playing 99% of the time. Some reviews stated that it was the best rock amp they've ever played, some said it got too muddy when used with a fingerstyle attack in rock music, so what do you guys have to say about them?

Unfortuantly, this is me just being curious. Its impossible to justify those prices still in highschool, but I gotta ask questions;)

Hi Snake ,
I think your thinking of the TD650 when saying its a slap amp , the Fafner is known as a rock amp with more ols school sounding preamp , and the TD650 is more hi tech.
Its a great head , go try one out , if you play rock i really think you will like it , its very warm sounding but still have this transparent vibe.

Your probably right. I knew the Fafner was geared more twards the rock crowd, but still the reviews around Harmony Central and the like are mixed. Some saying its great, some saying its muddy, etc, etc.

Hell, one of the ones here on TalkBass refers to it as the TD650 Fafner head. That didn't help any confusion that had already built up;)

Now I just need to find a dealer near me...

Yeah its extremely versatile . I only do jazz gigs , both with the upright and Fender Jazz , and i can really get any tone i want.
Last week , a local bassplayer borrowed the drome for a punk rock gig since his rig was in his rehersal place , and i was so impressed hearing that the drome kept up with an extremely loud punk rock drummer , you dont find many combos capable for thoose volume levels , and still keeping it together without breaking up or loosing tonal quality.

Great. What kind of upright setup do you use? (mics, preamps...) I´m just curious becouse I do gigs with the upright also (and a Fender jazz).

It's the MultiDrive... I was thinking about that one too, but I heard the Valve Drive can be used as a decent pre-amp (that would help on those acoustic gigs where I go direct through the board)
