The official gym & weightlifting thread! rep #3

After getting a single at 485 last weekend & missing 495lb twice, I'm going to pass on attempting 500lb this Friday afternoon. It is just a matter of time in 2013.

Instead, as this is the final week of lifting in 2012, it is now the week of "Odd Lift Maxes". Just having some fun, but getting in a little bit of training amongst work, holidays, and vacation prep.

On the list:
1. Rectangular Fix
2. Jefferson lift
3. One arm DB press
4. Single arm deadlifts (with straps)

Odd lifts already tested:
1. Wrist levering - holding an 8lb sledge hammer at various lengths along the handle (10-18 inches from the weight), with the weight in front & also in back. Not one to do when gigging that night.
2. Kettlebell press (from the handle, with bell upwards) - worked up to 5 singles with 24kg. This was very hard on the wrists - another one not to do when gigging that night...

Whats the post op recovery time going to be ?

Good luck dude!

Thanks man. Not sure, but it feels like arse right now. They did find torn labrum while they were in there. That was unexpected. Going to arrange for PT tomorrow. Even though it hurts, I'm really motivated to make a big comeback. I've been toying with the idea of doing a show next year, mainly to celebrate turning 50. I've been making some real quality gains the last 6 mths, hoping this is just a minor setback. 3rd surgery on that shoulder though, so who knows. I do know this though, the constant pain I had in my left bicep isn't there anymore. 1st time in years. So that's a step in the right direction.

I was going to post this in this or the "TB weightloss challenge" thread, but I found this first. I started playing rugby last summer, and lost 15 pounds. I played prop, mostly. Since then I got back into weightlifting. About 13-15 years ago, I lifted seriously in high school. I didn't continue it through the later years, though. I had some dumbbells that I could add standard plates to, and I did that until I started playing rugby. I was still strong, but not strong like I remembered.

I bought the 300# olympic barbell set at Dick's and have been doing power cleans/push presses, deadlifts, etc since October. Man, that's the best move I ever did! I'm not benching because I'm lifting in my back yard, and don't have a spotter. For chest I just do plyo pushups. I figure the overhead push press does enough in that regard, anyway.

I got my deadlift (which I never have practiced previously) up to 360#. I have to rig a few of my standard plates with chains to get the greater effects.

Since I'm also new to power cleans, I've been having fun with those, as well. I'm at a 1RM max of 180, and might go for 185 this Friday. I lift twice/week and do bodyweight movements in between (squat thrusts [I refuse to call them 'burpees"], chins, and some variation of dips and Turkish getups).

So what are you meatheads lifting nowadays?

Today was a light day, so nothing spectacular. I'm still really proud of what I did last Friday though - Squat 430x5, Press 185x5, and deadlift 470x3. My next max testing session is Saturday, where I will be going for 1RM in the squat. I REALLY REALLY want to hit 500lb before the end of the year.

405 bench
450 squat (bad knee used to be a lot higher)
450 dead (knee again)
245 military press

Finally got the full clear from the Docs. Started cutting down on the bad food stuffs over the last few weeks because I figured good news was finally coming. I also ordered a Bio-impedance scale to help me track my BF% at home.

Right now, I'm at 1800 calories a day, and trying to hit 200g of protein on days I'm lifting. If I can get my weight and BF down some, I'll start trying to put muscle back on again.

I'm probably going to go back to one of the 5x5's. I was seeing pretty good gains from those before the injury.

How is the lifting coming?

I just competed in my first powerlifting meet this past Saturday. I got 445, 465, and 475 on the squat, 285, 300 & 315 on the bench, and 465, 495, and 520 on the deadlift. My BW was 241.6 (JUST made the 242 class!), and was in the sub-master division (age 33-39). I was in the "raw modern" division, which allows knee wraps for the squat & a belt.

I went very conservative on my attempts. I probably could have gotten a bigger squat & deadlift, but I wanted to go 9/9, which I did, with all green lights on every lift.

Stay strong!

Are you doing a pyramid of reps (going to lower reps per set with higher weight) or just doing 10 reps for 8 sets? (not sure going by the post).

8 sets seems like a lot per session on the bench, but I dare say it depends on your goals.

Your delts are always going to come into play on the bench, if they are tiring before your chest, it's because your shoulders are lagging behind. You could put in some more work focused on your shoulders. That's about all I've got.

I'm doing 10 reps per set regardless until I reach my 10 rep max and then work back down.

I always thought that because my shoulders are visually more advanced they were compensating for weaker pectoral muscles.

Maybe I had it backwards!

:crying: :confused::eek:
