The official gym & weightlifting thread! rep #3

Oy! I SO need to get back into the swing of things. I've found every excuse not to use the equipment I already own! ( NO excuse! ) The end result is a flabby FG. My chest has turned into a fine display of moobs. What kills is I still look in the mirror and see that other dude. The one with the actual muscles. I look like I ate the FG from 10 years ago :(

My moobs are almost completely gone.

Thanks! I've been reading about how some folks use it as an assistance to the back squat. I did a max test so I can know where I am starting. I gotta get that 500lbs back squat this year (currently at 465)!

It'll happen. That's less than 10%.

Lots of Olympic lifters, especially those who follow Bulgarian methods, prefer it to back squats (what we called Olympic squats back in the day). The end of the clean is essentially just a very deep front squat. They're really gonna amp up your regular squat.

Well, today was the first day back in the gym after a couple of year layof where I put on 50 or so pounds of sexy body fat. I went VERY light and am still feeling it. Today was chest/triceps.

Lord, this is going to be a chore.

did I kill this thread singlehandedly?

Yep. I was remembering how much it s**ked when I started working out. :) Things I didn't know I had hurt.

Then after about 4 months it was like breathing. Not doing it s**ked.

I'm coming back to heavy lifting after wanking around and getting fat for about 17 years. Started life as an Olympic lifter, transitioned to powerlifting and, after tearing my meniscus while training for the ADFPA Nationals in 1995, basically gave up lifting heavy and concentrated on career and family. Well that was the rationalization anyway. Truth is I was afraid of messing up my knee again and, quite honestly, tired of the discipline and the diet.

Started back seriously about 4 months ago. Spent some time doing general conditioning and now am working a simple routine that includes squats, front squats, power cleans, bench presses, deadlifts and military presses in various combinations for 5 sets of 3 to 5 reps 3 days a week as well as more aerobics than I ever did as a younger man.

See how it goes.........

Stay strong mah brothah.

I'm simply doing it because the wife keeps squeezing my love handles meaningfully.:(

Hey guys,

It's been a hot minute since I last posted. I've gotten back into my workout routine and things have been going great so far! I put on 12ish pounds over the summer (I'm now up to 170), but it's nothing too crazy that I won't be able to shed off after a month or so.

Anyways! I recently was interested in reading up on what Tom Hardy has done to bulk up for various roles (most recently his part as Bane in the new Batman movie), and I found this article:

I'm just curious what yall's thoughts are on this. Personally, I think either his number are highly exaggerated, they counted his fat gain with his muscle gain, or he had some 'external' help to see those results. What do you think about his routines and whether or not they are sturdy enough of a method to see the gains that he has claimed?

Pretty sure the 30lbs in 3 months is also including the fat gain, he was much leaner in Warrior. Being a short arse, he doesn't need huge total gains on the frame he already had to look bigger.

There is always a bit of stretching in the numbers punted to the press too.

When a huge part of your job is how you look, you can also focus almost singley on that one thing.

Edit- also, 5x5s are great gainers. But I doubt it will have been that simple for him, traps alone ain't going to get that big in 3 months with the type of program listed at the end. He'll have had a high end personal trainer and have likely been doing a more advanced training program.

Thanks for that, Mohawk. I was rather curious about that 5x5 routine as I had never heard of it before, so it's good to know it's great for gains. I've been thinking about trying it out for this semester just to see what happens.

It's a good all-round worker. Good for gains in strength and size, particularly in early to intermediate lifters. You can really add a lot of weight to the bar in a relatively short space of time. It's also good because you can give yourself a belter of a workout in a fairly short period of time, great if you have a pretty busy schedule!

Though, as said, I don't think it's what Hardy will have been using here.

You guys are talking 5x5 ala' rippletoe I assume?

Aye, well, that seems to be what it's talking about in the article.

Though I'd think something more intensive would be used by someone like Hardy in that position.

I'm about to hit the gym for my morning workout. I'm about to turn 41 and am in the best shape of my life after losing 50lbs - good diet and lots of exercise. Boot camp 1-2x, personal training 2x (kettle bells and Muy Thai), weights 1-3x per week. Typically some kind of activity on the weekends - either biking (20-25 miles) or hiking (9-12 miles) and sometimes a few games of pick-up soccer. Battled back from injuries sustained in a car accident from years ago (fractured neck & back).

Looking to change it up for the fall - want to lose that last 10lbs and continue to get stronger. Try something a bit different - any ideas?
