I really like the way it sounds and plays as well and doubt I'll ever get rid of it. There's a couple of other basses I own that will get the pink slip long before I consider parting ways with this one. It is a bit heavy at just over 10 lbs. but that hasn't ever bothered me. With those small upper bouts and the associated attach point for the strap, the neck does dive quite a bit though.

I lost my job and had to sell all of my basses last year :rollno: Just picked up a Hondo Fame 830 at a pawn shop last month for $60. I have owned many Fender Ps and other high end basses but this Bass just plays and sounds better than all of them. The build quality is incredible weighing in at 10.7 lbs. Grover tuners. String thru back. High mass bridge.The Pups are really warm and punchy. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience with these basses?

how do these bad boys sound? I found one at a local pawn shop and it's actually v. nice. J bass body in sunburst, two tele pickups with covers on both, and a thumb rest. Didn't get to play it, but it feels nice and heavy. Though I think they want around $200 for it LOL! I'll talk them down to something acceptable if these things actually go alright.

Hondo Alien update:
I took the advice from a member here (sorry, too lazy to go back through the thread and give proper credit), and upgraded the pickup to a Lace BassBar. I cleaned out half a mile of bogus (previous owners') wiring, deleted the switch (for now) and soldered it up in a standard vol/tone arrangement.
What a difference! I really like this pickup!
The pickup has a white fourth wire (optional), that apparently can be wired up to a switch with the white/black wire. The wiring diagram with the pickup isn't really clear as to what kind of switch, so I left it off for now...
Anyhow, its like playing a different bass. Full tone through all four strings... Guys in the band like it, so I've moved from fence-sitting to really enjoying this bass.

And how it is now...Allparts "J" neck with maple fretboard, gold speed knobs replacing the stock black ones, new (in 2005) Fender pots, and seymour Duncan Quarter-Pounder pickup...

Dad bought it for me for Christmas in 1980-something brand new, and I've held onto it all these years...Aside from SEVERE neck dive, and it weighs a ton, it plays and sounds great!!...

Also that Kustom amp takes me back...The year before I got the Hondo, dad bought me this for Christmas....

How hard was it fitting the allparts j neck on the hondo? Did it just drop in.

Been a few years since I rebuilt that bass, but from what I remember, it was a perfect fit...Don't think the holes were drilled for the screws, so the hardest part was keeping the neck straight with the body to mark for the screw holes...Otherwise a perfect fit...

I just got this Hondo 2 Pbass copy last night. I don't know what kind it is and it doesn't have any S# so I don't know what year it is. The pots where messed up and it was missing a couple screws, so I fixed it up this morning I never use pots or knobs so I just wired the pup to the jack. It sounds and plays really good I like it a lot. Can anyone help with what it might be called and maybe a year it might be

Greets!! My first "serious" bass all-of-my-own was (and still is) a Neck-thru Hondo Double-P exactly the same as posted by paullong444 on this thread's first page, but without the Kahler trem bridge (Mine had instead a brass bridge, plus brass nut, a couple DiMarzio P pickups, "Hippie sandwich" wood neck-thru construction a-la-Alembic), and although a little bit of a neck diver, it sounds AWESOME. I have it since 1992, and even got to play it alongside Victor Wooten when he was around here in 1997 and actually had tone compliments for it :). Then later I bought Hondo's 80s version of the Kramer "Duke" headless bass, which I use a lot for traveling (recently had some trouble with it's pickup poles, the original Kramer one was a Schaller, pretty hard to find, and seems like the only way to retrofit it is with a couple of bridge J's without casing... must do it soon). Then a couple weeks ago I was helping a friend who I usually work with, who owns a little studio and trades equipment, and he gave me a bunch of "junk" he didn't wanted anymore. Between the rubble and scattered parts there were a bass neck and some bodies... among which was the aforementioned neck's corresponding one. And so I am rebuilding now a Deluxe Series 808 short scale bass!. Already put new black tuners on it, a spare bridge I had around (the 808 is strung thru body!) and a P pickup I had lying around. Now... the 808's body is actually routed to have 2 P pickups!. I have seen pics of it with the P pickup either closer to the neck or in a more traditional "centered" fashion, but none with the TWO P pickups on... which I intend to do. (Curiously, my Neck-thru Hondo has also 2 P pickups, but is one "centered" and the other one closer to the bridge, not the neck). Only thing that worries me is how to build the pickguard for using the two Ps. It is currently wired direct to an output jack (mounted on an improvised support), and I must say it sounds AWESOME!. So... among my puppies, these three are Hondos, and I am quite proud of them.

I have the same hond bass, and i need to know what kind of pick-up and pickguard i can use! I started to restructure thi bass, but now o need to know what kinf of pick-up i can put on, and where i can buy a new pickguard.

If anyone owns a Hondo II prec (or any other prec) with covers (pickup and bridge) i would be eternaly grateful for measurements/schematics of said covers...
I havent been able to find any online, and the stores here are really expensive, i paid for my bass less than those two covers cost.
Thanks in advance :)
