I hear it too. I liken it to the sound of a solid ASH body with no top. Neutral but airy. I don't have a steel bridge, but the description sounds plausible--similar to the difference between stainless and nickel frets. Steel rings loud and clean and tightly-coiled-spring-like: great for clang, snap and pop. Nickel and brass are softer and warmer. Aluminum is a stiff, light crystal--and that's what it sounds like.

I'm sure it wouldn't do more than possibly leave a scratch on a cymbal or stand. But it could draw blood if it hits something squishier.

Yep, I have a set, they are extremely similar to the SBC H/S pickups, but with a little more clarity in the upper mids and treble.

I quite like them in my Frog 6-string! They sound great, they are not the most agressive sounding pickup, but that's what I got my other frog for :D
(and I'll take any excuse to post my frog collection)

I -really- like the neck pickup. The bridge pickup is great as well, but in my opinion the neck pickup is absolutely fantastic

Does anyone have experience with the Delano JC 4 HE/M2? That's the jazz pickup with no visible poles. (My sometimes aggressive playing style occasionally sends strings into pole pieces, depending on the bass, and results are unpleasant.)

I'll be able to chime in around the end of next month, as I ordered an Elwood L4p with them, mainly for hum-cancelling but also for the pole-free look. (Edit: clarified it will be a passive setup)

I played an Elwood at a local dealer with these pickups. I'm usually not the biggest fan of single coils, but these I really liked. I decided on the Times Square pickups for my Frog, but the HE/M2 were a close second.

After playing the bass for almost 10 days, I can only repeat: What an amazing bass. I only removed the flatwounds again and added roundwounds because I had the impression that the flats do not go well with the high-resolution, fine-detailed bass culture pickups. Now with the rounds the bass reveals its true potential. Truly unbelievable.
To be honest, I didn't worry about whether I could reach the 24. fret. I rarely have to go there anyway. HaHaHa. But it works. It's very comfortable up to the 22 fret, I can still get to the 24, but someone with smaller hands would have problems.

I have them in my Frog and had the 5-string version in my Elwood L (sold that one a few years ago). What would you like to know specifically?

I have a Noll 4-band in a Warwick $$ and the Maruszczyk preamp in a Frog. I like the functionality of both, but both introduce a little more audible hiss when on than some newer preamps. I suggest asking Adrian what preamp has the least hiss when on. This is one of my peeves so maybe it won't bother you as much. Glock's are definitely quieter, but so are many others; Nordy 3b, Newer Ibanez, Newer Kiesel, Audere. . .the list goes on.

Everything you can think of about the sound and responsiveness that you're willing to share. Your initial impressions, and how those impressions may have changed over time. How they compare to other pickups you like (or don't like, for that matter).

It seems you liked them enough to order them a second time, and that's a good sign.

I'll be interested in any feedback about this as well. I hate hate hate unwanted noise such as hiss coming from my bass.

That's because they're not single coils. They only look like single coils.
