I have small hands so I love the feel of Jazz necks, and love the look of laminated necks with block inlays, but I've also really wanted a Stingray for a while.

Has anyone specced up a four string Elwood with a MM/J or J/MM/J combination?

How close to a Stingray can the basses get with the pickup/preamp combinations available? I've had a play around with the configuration tool and think I've got something that would suit, and getting one built is an intriguing proposition considering it's not too much more money over a Fender or Atelier-Z Jino Jazz bass model.

Also, use Delano's page as a reference to look up the various MM pups (NB: there are other pages on Delano's site that has MM hybrid pups as well):

ALSO! You may have to do the same for Aguilar, Bassculture, Haeussel, etc -- I picked Delano specifically because I knew they have MM replacements

I didn't know anything about Delano pickups, so I had to go through A LOT of vides to hear samples. Many times it won't be 100% relevant to your setup -- for instance, I would find a video of the pup I was interested in, but it would be a shortscale fretless. Still, it gets you in the ballpark of what it sounds like.

Coincidentally, I read your post. You can get very close. You should read my review of the Frog I own. I also own a 6 string now that has the ray specs. I'll shoot a photo...

They both sound better than the '08 4H I have.

I haven't tried a 32", but I have a 30" Elwood that I generally use in Eb, and in a few songs, tune down to C#. It works absolutely fine, and that's playing fairly aggressively with a pick. It just relies on finding the right strings for you, I think - GHS Boomers do the job for me with a .107 string, although I have gone for a .112 custom Newtone string gauge in the past.

I see no reason why a medium scale tuned to E would be a problem, unless you're really particular about tension. Maybe if you play a lot high up the E string - I find mine gets a bit wooly around the 10th and up, but again, that's with a 2" shorter scale tuned down another 3 semitones.

It's normally about 4 months, but sometimes it'll take less time.

My Elwood arrived the next day. I live in the Netherlands, which is right across the border.

So it took about 2 months in this case.

Randy @ Bass Spotlight just quoted me 20 weeks. Based on feedback here, it seems closer to 14-18 weeks. Biggest issue seems to be parts/pickups. Delanos seem ok; if you're ordering Nordstrands it may prolong the build.

I have two 32" scale, 5-string Elwoods. One, fretless, is tuned E-C, and the E on each bass is fine. The B on the bass strung B-G is also fine, not quite the B of a 35" Lull I once had, but it's not far off. The crux: I enjoy making music with it, and I never wish it was something other than what it is.

Thanks for for the inputs. Am using only for playing jazz and like 10% rock/pop. Prefer a smaller bass to carry around when jamming. Would rather go 30, but not sure about losing the tension of the E string.

Heck, I have an Atelier short-scale 5-string, and the B is a little floppy with a .125 but not bad at all with a .130 (both fine sound-wise). I'm sure the E is fine on a short-scale, especially if you use the right set. My Maru has such a nice tight feel and sound, that I can't imagine a problem.

All the strings on any short scale are floppier than on a 34" bass. That's just physics and part of the short scale experience. String-through is irrelevant. String choice can mitigate this, but if you absolutely need a stiffer feel, don't buy a short scale bass.

This is the picture from the configurator. It was ordered with Delanos. The waiting is the hardest part. Maybe I'm getting worked up over nothing. However, we are approaching the 5 month mark. Hopefully I'll have a NBD soon.

That looks great, love the color! Short or medium scale?
I love my Delano's I've had them in a couple different basses, so hopefully you'll be happy with them.

The 5+ month wait for the Nordstrand's, with a really bad customer service experience, kind of lessened my desire to own Nordstrand's for any future builds, for me. If they came in a bass that I bought off the shelf, maybe.
