Guys..!!!

Now I need your help! I'm almost taking the decision to buy a MDT Kingston (I've got finally the authorization from my wife :smug:)

So I'm very confused after reading all these posts and don't know really what to decide.

Whats better in your opinion, Heir 5 or KZ5? I like deep, strong and defined bass sound.

Hurry up! I'm waitin to fill the order :hyper:

Go with which one you like the looks of the most. You can always replace the pickups and electronics on either one. Personally I'd go with the KZ because they tend to be lighter weight and balance a little better.

Thank you all for your opinions. I think I'm going to the KZ5, even if I have to upgrade the electronics later.

I have no chance to test each one, so just buy with closed eyes...

The KZX is a model very hard to find in Europe, I can't find a shop selling it.

I'll share some photos when I get the KZ5.

Get the KZ. You can tweak the eq on your amp or a good outboard preamp will suffice until you can upgrade the electronics.

Just got my Heir 4 back after having a Nordy NJ4SV. I didn't have a problem with the sound before and really only changed to stop it picking up noise from lights and computer screens etc.
My first impression is that the Nordstrand is just a tiny fraction quieter, clearer and much easier to dial in a sound I like.

Okay, I have a question that I believe is perfect for this thread...
I own an MTD Kingston Heir (5-string), one of the newer active ones. I notice that the B string is a bit lacking. It is more quiet, a little bit "farty", it sounds almost like a different bass when I play it verse the other 4 strings. I don't have this issue with my other 5-string, which has the same specs - 35" scale, 19mm spacing, Rosewood (I believe).

Anyone else have this problem? Do you think it is down to a simple set up or sometihng with the electronics? More integral?

I think it's a 2000. I found a place online that explains the dating of MTDs with the serial number. I'd give you a link but I don't remember where I saw it...it was a few weeks ago. IIRC, the first two numbers of the serial number indicate the year.

I experienced the same thing when I first got my Heir 5, which was unfortunately purchased of the wall at a GC. I was really frustrated for the first few days since I was under the impression that the zero fret was supposed to make, for example, a fretted E on the B string sound just like an open E. Once I got home and plugged into my amp in a nice, quiet environment, that was SO not the case! Farty and pathetic. So, I put some new Rotosound flats on and got a nice setup done by a local shop and that B string problem was gone. In fact, now it booms the way I had hoped it would when I got the thing. It made a HUGE difference. I don't know when you got your bass, but even though it sounds obvious, I'd suggest you change strings and get it set up properly. Couldn't hurt. :bassist:

+1 String change - I put Low Riders on my MTD Beast (old production jazz) and it made a world of difference.

Finally...I got my MTD Z5....see this beauty attached.

The sound is not as bad as I heard, actually is much better than my Tobias Growler

So tomorrow I get to picky Heir up from the shop, my tech did a setup and three some fresh strings on it. Called me tonight to let me know it was ready to go but I got stuck stupid late at work. So we shall see I it remedies my problems. I am hopeful after reading replies here - thanks LaklandMike and Desertsolace! I will post pics here as well. May as well get me my # b/c I don't have any plans to sell it. I'd love to check out a fretless MTD, not that I could afford it at this point.
