petey, you may be correct, i really don't know...i'm pretty sure all of the JJ4 and JJ5 basses that are rolling around rightnow all had the bodies cut last summer...they're just being sent out one and two at a time due to the j basses not being a part of the regular production schedule...they still may or may not become production basses
and tom, i may take the ramp off...the truss cover is finished in dark cherry burst, too...i might swap that out this weekend and take a pic of it without the ramp

FWIW, at least IMHO I think it would look much better that way... if you don't mind me saying so.
I received my JJ 5 on March 28. It has the alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. It plays like butter, with a very focused bottom, strong lower mids and nice highs...a good all around bass. Mike T. refers to it as a workingman's bass, and I concur. I have gigged with it twice, and I can tell you, it fits nicely in the mix. It is not as open as my 535, and I am ok with that. It has 21 frets so it somewhat limited in the upper register, but if you don't do a lot up there, then this is the bass for you. I have played it through an Epi UL 902 c, UL 410 Series 2, and the UL 310 Series 1, and through the Genz Benz 6.0 Shuttle and a UL 112, and in all applications it sounded great. Mike still doesn't know whether they will be hand made by him or sent out and machined. I recommened that if you can get your hands on one, do it. As you know without me saying, the quality is uncompromised.
I forgot to mention that the JJ 5 and 4 being offered by the Bass Exchange in LA were brought to the NAMM Show by Mike T., and the Bass Exchange acquired them from him. Also, my JJ 5 number is 1683, which appears that Mike T is not starting from 1, but continuing from the last bass he made, regardless of model type; I of course could be wrong.

No offense, but I really like this look a LOT better, and yeah, Mike uses inserts where screws are expected to be used more often. For example, the elex cover is regular wood screws, but the trussrod and battery covers always use inserts with machine screws.hey, vic, this pic's for you, bro
I just want you guys to know, you have some of the best taste on this forum. MTD basses are absolutely beautiful. When I decide to drop the big bucks on a bass, I will be in line to check these babies out.
i haven't checked out a newer mtd, but my 535 #28 was all wood screws...i havne't taken the elex cover off of the back of this bass, but i'm thinking it's going to have inserts, too...it's also an ash cover vice the plastic cover on my old 535...there also isn't a seperate battery box...i may not put the slap ramp back on...haven't really decided yet

well, according to mike in his interview, he isn't really sure...he still doesn't know if he's going to do the j-basses as a production instrument, and if he does, whether or not the bodies and necks will be outsourced or made by hand by him in his shop...you gotta understand...with mike, building j-style basses is pretty much totally against his style...
you can tune your bass with a regular tuner...the bfts comes into effect when you have to intonate your bass...
It sounds like crap. He was so bummed about it he deleted the posts. He's already dumped on on me for $500 plus a Squier J that's missing one pickup and has one bent tuner.
I don't think Mike is going to make the JJ with an exotic top. I also think that he is trying not to price the JJ above where they are presently priced. To add an exotic top may price the JJ up there with the 535's et. al. The bottom line is I don't think he knows what he is going to do at this point. Neptoon is correct in pointing out that Mike really did not want to make the J bass. But for a couple of his artist requesting that he make one, these basses would not have been made.
it just sounds freakin' huge! it's got this hot 'steel on wood' aggressive type tone...it's an inherent growl (i believe because of the ash) that just won't go away...even on the low B! i also picked up a markbass lmII to go with the accugroove el whappo...i know it sounds nuts, but it's a great sound...i really fell for the berlin combo, but i wanted something a little bigger...next weekend i'm going to do some recording with a project i'm working on...i'll post some mp3's as i work them out...yeah, this bass freakin' rocks...too bad i already sold it to vic for peanuts...the broken squier should be here soon!
