The Official MTD USA Thread

I tried to stop him, told him he was being WAY TOO generous, but he just kept on insisting...

Cheers,
Cameron

Some much better pics of my soon to be departed 635:

Wow! I love the burl in that top - truly stunning.

WOW! Sorry if you've already posted on this and I missed it or have forgotten, but why? That's got to be KILLER!!

Just beautiful! Where's it headed?

What are you after regarding a Roscoe?

Well in a few weeks I shall be finishing a deal on my 535 for a rare Roscoe SKB with LG P'up positioning and a beautiful finish, it can be seen here. It now has Nordstrand Big Singles installed. This has really all stemmed from having a recent go on that Roscoe, I've kind of realised that as amazing as my MTD's are, that Roscoe alone was enough to change my mind.

To my ears that Roscoe had much more mids to dial in and also had the same warmness as well, and also it maintained the same zingy/Hi-Fi tone that I adore in MTD basses. The body is just as comfortable and of course, looks amazing in the flesh as well. And being a fan of so many Gospel bassists, I've seen numerous examples of both basses in live situations and both do exactly what I want in a bass.

I think you all know that it's well documented on here that some MTD players who get a bit frustated with their basses end up either moving to Roscoes or Skjolds or Sadowskys or Ken Smiths.

I'm ideally going to be selling the 635 so I can buy this beautiful http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Roscoe_LG_3005_Flame_Maple_Ash.html"]LG from our only UK stockist.

That's a very nice Roscoe. In some respects, it's quite similar to the one I gave up to get my 635.

Myrtle over ash, purpleheart fingerboard, Bartolini electronics. I loved the "sweetness" of that bass, but couldn't dial in aggressive upper-mids without affecting the overall tone. In a perfect world I'd have both basses, but given how much I enjoy the 635 the sacrifice seemed worth it. I am framing an idea of buying it back someday, though. Definitely different animals, but I love what each one does.

Anyway, sorry for the tangent there. Congrats on the SKB - the last owner sure didn't keep it very long. :D And, good luck on that LG. I've read/heard about a number of folks, like myself, going from Roscoe to MTD. It's very interesting to read about someone going in the other direction. I definitely appreciate the fine points of both instruments.

Josh535,
I've owned a couple Roscoes, and played a few others, and they just didn't do it for me. I went FROM that TO MTDs (and Skjolds, as well) and never looked back. :)

Not being critical, to each their own. Enjoy those Roscoes, they are very fine basses... no doubt. :)

You will have to change your TB handle tho. :D

Interesting Josh535.
I sold Marilyn#19 to get a Roscoe SKB 3006 fretless. Swamp ash body/Bubinga top/Lined Diamondwood finger board. Love it.
I do miss the MTD though, and I will be getting another in the future, more than likely along the lines of your soon to be departed 635, but first I have to see If I can find a builder willing to build my fantasy bass. That should be quite an adventure.

I traded my first Roscoe and cash for my first MTD. Sold my MTD later and bought a Roscoe Fretless, traded that for a Fretted Roscoe and then bought a Fretless Roscoe. Now I have two Roscoes and no MTDs:(. I sent pbass a offer too to balance out the MTD/Roscoe ratio. Can't put the MTD on bottom right now or that would be a divide by zero:eek:. If I could put a Roscoe neck on MTD body and electronics I would be in heaven. I am not saying that to get flamed here in the MTD thread, but that would be my ideal tonal/ergo bass. Oh wait, that is why I have the one in the avatar in process:D

I think we all know theres no need to be critical when it comes to these brands:). They all have a worthy reputation for making amazing basses. You guys are lucky enough to be in the country in which they are made and thus can easily find one to try out and either know of many of guys with either an MTD/Roscoe/Ken Smith/Skjold etc...

On the BC forum, I'm of 4 guys who actually has had or has an MTD, and to have been able to have 2 at one point at such a young age was an awesome opportunity and has ultimatley helped shaped my idea of what my perfect tone is.

Interesting Josh535.

I've already partially traded my 535 for Molans Sadowsky NYC, but he'd prefer to swap his Roscoe instead (Which is perfectly fine with me:smug:) and in the whole time he's had it I haven't missed it at all. It may be different with the 635, but lately I've been playing my Spector Euro even more, so it really dosen't get much of a look in at all and I can't really justify it being played in seldom, especially when you consider their value.

Of all the basses I've owned the MTD's are in my top three. I found the range, flexibility, and quality of tone to be outstanding, as well as build quality, and equally important the over all feel and design aesthetic. Simply put, Mike builds amazing basses.
I will own another 635-24 again, possibly a lined fretless.

Well, sorta... I mean, as a general rule these are still not really typically found in stores, BUT, it is easier and cheaper for us to do the usual thing and have the basses shipped to use the "eval period". If we decide it's not the right one, we pay both ways shipping just for the luxury of playing it for a couple days, but that's still a lot better than folks living abroad, for whom that's not even an option... at least for the most part.

Well I talked to Mike over the break (well emailed anyhow) and he said unfortunately he couldn't do me a J/J 535 at this time... so, I'm pretty bummed but ah well... :bawl:

He was still sold on the walnut/ash + maple/ash combo for a 535 and a more aggressive tone, but I was/am still jonesing for a J/J setup with that neck!!

I guess I'll just have to nab the next USA Saratoga or JJ5 that comes up FS and see how it works out. But still, it's only 34" scale and 21 frets, both of which I didn't want for this next bass.

Grrr.
