The Official MTD USA Thread

I may have missed it, but has anyone here compared the MTD Nickel strings to the MTD Stainless strings? I've been using the SS strings for some time now on my 635, but am wondering if the nickel strings will give a bit more low mid punch.

Hi, Really nice, congrats!
When I received the bass, I was a little bit disappointed with the dark cherry sunburst, because I wanted to have the same finish I saw on a pic (I think it was on bassexchange) but this pic was taken with lot of light, and I think Mike can't do the same finish on 2 basses. But now I can say I love the work Mike did on mine!

Cool. Thanks.
I was kinda the same about the finish. The digital pictures I had seen online made it look this tacky circus orange color I did not want. In person or in lower light, its much more a refined and interesting color. I have come to really like this Dark Cherryburst now that I have my hands on it. ;)

Inspired by my new Bass:

I fired up the computer and recorded two Finger-style clips using the D.I. signal out the back of my Eden Traveler amp. These are raw audio, no EQ, no editing or processing was done. Just the sound the amp works with. :D

First, the melody of "All The Things You Are" using mostly the bridge pickup. Download here.

I like to doodle on Bass while the NBA is on TV. I was watching the All Star Game and came up with this funky little groove. Recorded using all neck pickup. Link Removed

alangrus,

What strings did you end up putting on your new MTD?

Well, Justin at Bass Exchange gave me a set of MTD Stainless Steel Custom Medium 5s and that made sense to me on an MTD Bass. First, they fit, the strings are exactly the right lengths. I think the low end is great, there is plenty of high end "zing" and they are quite even from string to string. I really like these strings and now that I know these work perfect, thats all I need to put on this MTD Bass.

Yes some posts deal with this before.
I wanted to know how would sound my bass with nickel strings so I bought 2 MTD Nickel strings sets, I still have to string the bass with.
I'll keep you posted.

I remember a an NT MTD 5-string for sale a while ago on TB, bubinga body and wenge neck/fb. I did a search, but it seems like the seller sold the bass and deleted the thread too.

Did anyone here get it, or does anyone have the pictures of it? It is the most beautiful MTD I've ever seen.

I believe that bass was owned by Ari in the UK, but I may be mistaken. He posts reguarly on basschat.co.uk, so you could try and contact him there.

I can tell you that Andrew Gouche has a NT. I played it at Gerald Veasley's bootcamp. It sounded as amazing as it looked. The one I am referring to has a white wenge neck that goes through the body, not the one pictured above.

Here are some bigger pics:

This bass is one of my absolute dream basses.

Also, white wenge is as awesome as white chocolate!

Lastly - is it just the angle, or does the nt construction make it appear as the NT 5-string has tighter spacing than the BO?

Ok, scratch the first sentence, this is THE dream bass for me. My favorite woods combined with my favorite pickups, favorite body shape, builder. To top if off, it's even Feitenized!

Hi Mtdholics!

I have few questions for those who played on both old (s/n <300) and new Mtd basses, is there a difference? (with same wood spec)
Is an old mtd better than a new or opposite? No difference? What about the buzz feitten system? I mean is therer something except the woods that changed?
It seems older Mtds are cheaper compare to new ones on the second hand market but why?
Stupid questions? :)

Thanx!
a mtd lover

Hi pfunker,
You can hear some soundclips of actual and former production (like #106) in the file section over there: Link Removed. Some clips are made with basses which have the same woods combos.
There are a few differences: older have no Buzz feiten tuning system, AFAIR the electronics is not exactly the same... (TBC).
I think Mike improves his woods selection and his building processes to produce better looking basses now, the woods he uses are really awesome nowadays. Maybe that's why some are more expensive than others in the classifieds, but to me there are all MTDs.

Could be, but not guaranteed based on age alone. As I recall, it wasn't so much that he had an earlier sound and a later sound as much as it was that there were a few periods of time where he released runs of basses with different preamps from Bill that sounded somewhat different, but not like night/day. I also think there were two versions of the current preamp (I think he moved the pickup preamp out of the pickups into that separate module), but the tone was the same.

Anyway, my main thing is, I think we learned it's not always safe to assume if the bass is older it'll have a different sound from the elex.

That said, Mike's basses are so individualized anyway (which gets into your point about his wood selection, which I agree with), it's almost hard to even try to assign "tonal generations" to his stuff. It goes from bass to bass... not year to year. :)
