The Official MTD USA Thread

Mike said the tone will shift over the next four to six weeks before its true voice settles in, so I'm filled with anticipation! I think I'll post a sound file every friday through January to see what changes.
Great idea!

I'm looking forward to hear that!

I never noticed changes in the sound of my MTDs through the first weeks I had them. All I can say is I really enjoy day after day the Ash body & Wenge/Wenge combo. As mike said the sound compression is really nice and helps having a really accurate sound whatever you play, fingertsyle or slap.
But I agree with Mike & you as the feeling I have is that this wood combo just sounds better with time passing by.

hi Cameron,
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply to my query. I managed to have a listen to all those links you posted. The bass sounds great, and some very nice playing I might add.

The wood combination you have sounds like a winner, and especially if it's highly thought of by Mr T himself. I guess I'm after a do it all fretless that I can live with for a long time to come, and it seems you have found it there :)

Have you played any other fretless MTDs with different woods? I think I'll mail MT too for his take any other potential candidates.

thanks!

at his NAMM booth a few years back, but not long enough to comment on.

My best advice - take HIS advice - tell him what kind of music you play, what your favorite basses have been to date, what the drawbacks were, and go from there. He is the master.

And thanks for your comments on my playing. Not many good clips of me out there (yet). But it's a work in progress.

Cheers,
Cameron

I can attest to the fact that your bass' tone will change as it ages. When I first received mine, the tone was sort of brittle, not a lot of bottom. Within weeks, the tone settled and now it is full, punchy with the perfect amount of highs. I was recently in a bass only store, and a very seasoned bassist told me that it is the best sounding bass he had ever heard. My wood combination is Ash body, myrtle top, ash neck and maple fingerboard. I set my mids switch at 250, and boost it 75%. I also boost the bass depending on the venue, and boost the treble just past center. Even in a boomy room, the bass will cut through and be punchy.

A throwback to his late 80's greatness. Fabulous.

I'd be really curious how the neck through sounds with his NEW pickup/preamp system.

Cheers,
Cameron

"Seeing as you guys are so boring.....here's a tease..." lol;)

What are its expected tonal characterestics? Weight? New Pre amp, and pick ups; what has changed?

The bass sounds insane.. good balance and attack. Big bottom, warm, clear and thick. (Weight) this one is definitely not for the light weights.;)

(New Pre amp, and pick ups) I assume the post up top is referring to a current MTD neck-thru build with a 80's era wood combination, with his current MTD electronics.

Interesting how little traffic this thread has been generating lately. I'm wondering what's going on. It also seems that there have been a lot of MTDs up for sale on this site over the past little while. Could the lack of traffic here be due to the existence of the MTD enthusiasts site? :hmm:

Interesting insight, but note that this is part 5, so I wouldn't quite say that MTD's lack anybody's interest. ;)

Maybe the Holidays? Too many gigs and not enought time to surf the web. That's a good thing? More money to by gifts and MTD's. :bassist:

No, this preceded the "holiday season". You might be on to something with the gigs though. Maybe MTD players are too busy off gigging to post on TB. ;)

Not like those folks over on the Sadowsky thread... :D

I can't speak for anyone else, but I just don't have much to talk about these days. No beautiful MTD's being built for me, no planning of soon-to-be builds. Just still rocking my '96 435. But hey, I'm more than happy to spread a little Christmas/MTD cheer. I mean hey, don't tell me Santa doesn't resemble a certain legendary luthier...:ninja:
