The Official MTD USA Thread

As Vic said, and as I own already 4 MTDs 535, the only one I could (should?) buy is the ash/walnut burl body w/ ash/maple neck Vic is talking about. Otherwise I'm really digging each one in a different way. The ones I use most of the time are the poplar/maple burl body w/ wenge/wenge neck and the ash/maple burl body w/ wenge/wenge neck because they sound great and I've really understood how they respond in a band/heavy mix situation. The alder/redwood body w/ maple/rosewood neck has a Jazz Bass vibe, it's the most growly of the 4. The mahogany/redwood body w/ maple/ebony neck is still a new beast for me especially since I'm not used to use the piezzo, but I really enjoy it. It has nickels string while the other 3 have the stainless steel, that makes a great difference and a lot of different sounds already.

But I'll keep you posted for sure if I order a new one....

How many of you have stuck with the tapered 135 B string that Michael Tobias favours?

Same.
My MTD hasn't been getting a ton of action b/c I've been using my NS2 a bunch with my cover band, as bringing the Rodman to a $750 bar gig isn't the best idea ever, but I try to play it as much as possible at home.

YOU F'N IDIOT!

Ok, yeah, jk, but there is a somewhat serious undertone at least. :D :D

Seriously, you bought that bass to play it. PLAY IT. I mean, if you actually prefer the other bass for those venues, cool, but if you're not playing it out of fear, that's a sad sad waste of a bass YOU SHOULD BE ENJOYING. I've played lotsa' bars with my most incredible basses. It's not that hard to protect them from harm. Honestly.

It's your bass. You paid (dearly) for it. Play it. Enjoy it. Do not just become a "custodian" for some subsequent owner someday.

FWIW, anyway. :)

+1, play that bad boy!!

Reporting for duty! I love that 'B' string. I love the whole set, actually, and I run them on one of my Roscoes as well as both MTD's. Durability is my only beef, but I change strings fairly often anyway so it's not a showstopper. (Just seems like they go dead lickety-split...not much advance notice in comparison to most other strings.)

Don't you mean I.D.I.O.T.? :D But yeah, Amen! The tone I get from my babies makes me enjoy the gigging experience that much more. After hauling a backbreaking cab and head into some dive for crap pay, you'd best believe I want to (at the very least) drool over my own sound! :)

Nothing bites my a@% more than playing a gig and not having the tone I want. Except in the most hazardous playing conditions i.e., where my bass could sustain water damage, I take my bass. If in a club, where the patrons may be drinking, I put the bass in the case during breaks, and never take my eyes off of it. We pay too much money for these instruments for them to be furniture to be admired from a distance. I play the hell out of mine. After the gig I wipe it down and all that stuff, but during the gig, I play the hell out of it whether it's in the Ritz Carlton or Joe's Burger Joint.

Amen! I played my new MTD all summer from the most expensive country club to a 1000 person stinky Beer tent! Tone..gotta have it.

Merry Christmas to all you MTD brothers and sisters!

Take both of mine everywhere, in a big, heavy double bass bag so nobody will get away very fast if they attempt to steal them. Hard to play anything else, really.

and Merry Christmas to everyone.

Cheers,

Happy New Year, everyone!

And a bit of threadworthy news - it looks like I might be returning to the MTD USA flock pretty soon. Sold my first ash/ash MTD 535-24 to a mate a while back and have always regretted it, but he wants to return to 4-strings, so I'm actually going to buy him something more suitable (Elrick Evolution 4) and trade it back. :) In the meantime, I tried an ash/walnut, ash/maple model, but that didn't sounds as good as my old one, so I figured it makes sense to give the old girl another chance and get that MTD smile back on my face. :)

Cheers,

EG
