AMAZING!!!!

At this point I can say that I have received more positive comments on the sound of my 535 than I have on any of the other basses I've played. The gig I played last night was a mix of Motown, Stax, 80s pop/R&B, 70s funk and blues and not once did I find myself wishing I had a different bass for a particular song. After the first set, the keyboard player asked what kind of bass I was playing and went on to rave about the punchiness, clarity and fatness of my sound. At one point he added that the way I play must also have something to do with it. "No", I replied, "it's pretty much all in the bass"... :)

Good story, bass12.

I recently had an interesting experience. I carried my MTD 435, and a nice, high-end 5-string fretless with a very recognizable name (however, to be fair, not mentioned here) to a gig the other night. After our first song, a guy came up and suggested I play the 5, simply cause he was familiar with the brand name and therefore considered it to be a better bass. About midway through the set, I heard him between songs telling someone how great the MTD sounded. He may still not know what the name "MTD", but he'll never forget that sound. :bassist:

This is really good for me to hear!

Hey kids;
New 535 owner here. It's Vic's fault; I can't tell you how much money befriending him has cost me...

This one is coming to me from tb'er dabass. It's about 3 months old...ash/walnut + ash/maple. Fedex shows am delivery tomorrow!

Chef - you are a lucky man! That's the same wood combo I have on order from Mike right now (should be ready mid May). I also have Vic to thank for the inspiration. ;) Anyway, welcome to the world of the 535 - I think you're gonna love it!

Chef - I was playing mostly Fender and Sadowsky Jazzes before I got my 535. I love my Jazzes to death but my 535 "speaks" to me in a way that no other bass has. over 5 months in and the honeymoon is still going strong. If you happen to not like the bass you can at least rest assured that you won't have too difficult a time selling a 535 in that wood combo for (no doubt) what you paid for it. Be sure to post your first impressions when the bass arrives!

I've checked with mike himself. He verified that the top is resin impregnated quilted maple and the fingerboard is madagascar rosewood. I did a sound comparison with my birdseye maple board and found that it has bigger bottom, just about enough midrange and darker sounding while the one with the maple board is more midrangy and crystal clear brighter sounding. Both bass are punchy. Either way it's a great sounding bass and the best thing is now I have two different sound character with the same playability. Both bass plays so easy.
