The Official MTD USA Thread

Alan,

I put nickels on my MTD and preferred them over SS as it kinda took a little of teh harsh zing away and it did add a bit in the mids. Then I would bump the bass a bit and drop the treble a bit.

@vic:

I been messin' with the 535 b/t chores.
The eq is really pretty deep, very usable, and probably has more combinations than I can readily make sense of;)

It has "a bit of that MusicMan scoop" I've never been able to tolerate with any MM product.
I presume the stock strings are SS. I see MTD does offer nickels, and I wonder if those "fill some of that scoop," or if that's a case of me "trying to make the bass do something against it's character?

I can't wait to take it to work. I got nothing this week, and four nights next week.

Thanks Cory...might have to give that a shot. Did you use the MTD nickels?

If anyone else has tired/loves/hates nickels on their 535, I'd be interested in hearing more opinions...

No, not so much trying to make it do something it can't, but while you're messing with strings, DEFINITELY make use of the mid switch and boost. I find this particular wood combo takes to mid bumps like a fish to water. Sounds great without, but definitely effective when needed.

I believe I used DR LR Nickels. I like the tension of the LRs as it helps remove of the clankiness from my poor technique. No one has ever accused me of playing with a light touch;)

Posted this in the 'amp' forum too, but this weekend I played the MTD with one of my new Bergantino HT112ER cabs. Oh. My.

Great playing & tone as usual Jerry. So tell us about your new berg cab?

I use the MTD Nickels on my 435. IMO, they're the smoothest, punchiest nickels I've played and they definitely bring out the best in my MTD. The lows are great, the mids are very present, and the highs are crisp and clear. Great sound when digging in too. My only complaint is that they die quicker than D'Addarios, which is my other go-to nickel string.

I do have DA XL170SL in the music room...

I want to gig the 535 with the MTD stainless on there a few times before I move to something else, as part of the "getting to know you" phase.

Posted this in the FBass Club as well:

Hi, just wondering if any of you gentlemen (or ladies???) happen to own both a BN6 and a USA MTD 635 and if you happen to have a pic of them together.

Just trying to compare the body sizes... 5 strings ok too.

Pretty please.

:help:

Thanks in advance.

that's too hot for words....:eek::eek::eek:
Thanks! These are kinda' special actually. Tom and I both did the same thing 'cause we both more or less have the same MTD in this case. So the layers of the bass are the alder body, which is chambered (these are both "Marilyns"), then a thin "accent layer" of dark wood (can't remember what it is, but it's not ebony), then another accent layer of purpleheart, and finally the water cured redwood top. Similarly, the knobs are constructed of exactly the same materials. The knobs were made by Pete Skjold, who is a good friend of Mike's, and an amazing luthier in his own right as well.

Anyway, FWIW. :)

Thank you!!!

Not to push my luck but you wouldn't have one that straight on for both, would you?

So from the pic it looks like they're similar in size with the FBass just slightly bigger???

hey, no problem, happy to help. sorry I haven't any other pictures though - I just sold the F, so unfortunately can't take another one.
I'd say the pic, whilst not being totally accurate, is quite representative. I certainly didn't notice a massive difference in size while playing them, less than the picture suggests - it's quite interesting how much further the MTD neck extends past the end of the top horn compared to the F, as I hadn't really felt that difference when playing.

cheers!
