The Official MTD USA Thread

how about this:

Can you share your experience comparing your MTD and your GS5?
(if it is a GS5)

Hi guys, I wonder if this area that is framed in yellow clogs at the time of "Poping" in the slap technique? I have not tried one yet

If you want more room for popping, keep in mind that Mike also offers a 21-fret version. Vic's 535 in that photo is a 24-fret model.

Nope. You will be hard-pressed to find a better bass for slap playing - both in terms of sound and playability - than a 535.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he is referring to the truss rod cover, if your fingernail gets caught on it's edge... Am I right, FunkyMan???

If that's the question then my experience is I have some of this going on with my new 635-24 but not a big deal at all. And I don't use the high C for slapping as much so that helps. I don't think I put the cover back on as flush as it could when I adjusted the neck.

I had to re-read your post a couple times to "get" what you were talking about, but no, that seam at the edge of the truss rod cover has never caused a problem for me, and it hasn't caused problems for the other folks (some of which are WAY better at slapping than I) who've slapped on it.

Yes, that was my point, and I'm sorry I don't speak English well, at some point i thought that the truss rod cover protrudes, but I see that is leveled with the body.. the wood grain caused this impression

Your english is fine... But people read and hear differently so points get missed sometimes.

I wanted to add to my previous post regarding this... My fingernail gets caught sometimes - I've only had the bass a week - but I think it's more mental and that I change my technique slight so that I don't scratch up my new bass with a nice top. So I just gotta play normally and it's fine.

what's the one on the far left?

You might as well name them all for us, somebody's bound to ask.

Cheers
Cameron
I'm also not sure about the one on the left, but from right to left, I believe it's Ken Smith BSRJ5, Groove Shoppe 5 (GS5) 24 fret, MTD 535/21, and F Bass BN5.

This particular photo actually makes it look as if the trussrod cover is protruding above the top - but it actually is not. I've never had a problem popping on any MTD.

JC

I think the reason one might get the impression that the cover is protruding is that both the cover and top wood are slightly rounded at the edges rather than straight-cut. I've never had a problem popping on my 535.

and Brams77 got the 'berg...

Its a German bass from Sandberg.
Quite good instruments I guess you wont find them much in the USA, but in Germany they are widely spread.

all the ones I've played have been very good, and they seem to have a pretty good rep in the UK. Perhaps slighly overpriced given the competition though.

DOH! I shoulda known that. I didn't see the four dots. :)

thats the only thing I dislike about it - I wish they didn't put that inlay on the tops.

I just sold the F, and it's going into my fund for a fretless MTD :)

Hi Georges,
I don't think I'm the best at describing things like this, but the GS5 is a really nice bass. Tonally it's a lot closer to my Ash/Maple/Maple 535 than the poplar/wenge 535 in that picture i posted.
You might expect this, as the GS5 is also Ash/Maple. The GS5 I guess sits somewhere between the 535 and a more traditional jazz tone, I suppose what people call a "jazz on steroids".
The main differences I hear are that the 535 has slight compression to the attack, and has more "punch" to it, whereas the GS5 is a bit more open sounding.
Hope that makes some sense. I'll try to post some sound clips when I find some time to record them.
cheers
Gwilym
